Re The Society Groom - Mary Lyons adds to the Society Wedding series with this fast and fluffy reunion romance between a wedding planner h and stalkerific H who is determined to get his girl.
The h and H are titled neighbors - the H has inherited his father's Earldom and the h's father is an Honourable Lord or something. Ten years before the book starts, the h was 18 and the H was 23 and they had a Madly Passionate Fling.
The h was totally in love cause she was convinced the H was the modern version of a combo of Charles the Second, (whom the H is descended from on the wrong side of the blanket,) and Lord Byron.
When the h and H are discovered in flagrante delicto at the Earldom's annual Christmas party, (due to the machinations of a lot of upper class gold diggers out to score an Earl,) the h was summarily shipped off to Italy and then France.
The h's stepmother was another of the evil golddigger types, she hated the h and her father was losing his money left and right, so he was too preoccupied to worry about the h and left it to his wife to solve.
Tho the h wrote letters to the H, he never replied and was soon seen gracing the scandal rags with a string of lovely ladies from the HP Endless Buffet. The h managed to make it back to England after her stepmother dumped her dad for richer pastures and the h has spent the remainder of the time running a high end wedding business for the upper classes.
She has also supported her older brother through alcoholism, being gay and starting his own landscaping business - for which she paid the all the expenses for. The h also supports her elderly and feeble father along with their family home and a carer so her dad has someone to look after him.
The h is in the middle of another high society wedding when the H shows up to be a replacement best man. As soon as he hears the h's name, he is all about getting her alone and getting her horizontal again.
The h does her serious very best to resist her Treacherous Body Syndrome, even when she ends up spending the night at the H's flat because of a waterline break that prevents her from getting to her own little house.
We learn that the H never got her letters all those years earlier and that his mother and her stepmother also prevented the H from seeing the h again to explain that they both needed more time to grow up before embarking on a mad passionate affair that was either going to burn up in major flames or end in true love forever.
Now the H wants a second chance, the h has horrible, huge TBS moments, but she stands her ground and tells the H to stay out of her life cause he is utterly bad news for her. But this Earl H has a family motto - What I Promise, I Will Do- and he promised the h that she is going to give him another chance.
(The Earl H also has an really awesome dog named Duke, who outranks him. Duke goes almost everywhere with the H, but not to the boudoir bouncing places, cause he is a true gentleman dog and did not get nearly enough page time. Just sayin')
Anyhows, the h and her brother are supposed to go to a ski chalet vacation with some of her brother's school friends. The brother gets a huge commission for landscaping and can't make it, tho he insists that the h go as planned.
It is a set up by the H, tho the brother got the job honestly enough. The H shows up to pick the h up off the train and take her to the shared ski chalet and soon they are lurvin it up and having another fling.
There is a wannabe OW that the H totally rejects, the chalet girl manages to break her leg and the h is worried she will have to do all the cooking cause no one else can. But even with all that, the HP Lurve Force Mojo is strong.
When the wannabe OW makes one nasty remark too many at the nightclub they are at, the H seizes the day and pulls a soda can ring and proposes to the h. The h says yes, but treats it as a joke.
Until the paparazzi plaster news of the H and h's engagement all over the tabloids the next day and the H sneaks a wedding announcement into the really serious British papers. The h is still unsure, but she loves the H and decides to take the risk when he goes to her father and asks for her hand in marriage.
Then the H is called away to America because his sister's partner is in hospital and no one is sure the guy is going to make it. The h soldiers on, but then HER father dies and the h has to go sort that out.
We get a weird visit from the h's evil stepmother, but the h and her brother don't really care and then the H comes back and there is a huge passionate reunion.
The h is worried that the H's very regal mother won't like her, but the lady bows out of running the H's castle in favor of creating a new garden at the dower house and we leave the H and h happily married and continuing to consummate their pink sparkly HEA.
This one was cute and very fluffy HP outing. I wasn't too sure the H was REALLY over his playboy ways, but I believed it enough to finish the story and have a happy little moment as I savored the HPlandia Rosy Glow HEA.

Ten years later their path cross again. He was best man at a wedding she was coordinating. Later when lunching with others he lets it be known that they were engaged to be married. But he forgot to ask her before making the announcement. Will she let him dominate her? Or will she walk away? What happens next is the rest of the story.
"The Society Groom" is the story of Olivia and Dominic.
Basically the hero and heroine were together a decade ago, and separated by circumstances and parents. Since then, he is now a notoriously tomcatty royalty, and she is a successful wedding planner. They meet at a wedding where after initially not recognizing her, the hero is soon VERY keen on renewing their acquaintance. She tries her best to resist him, but he basically steamrolls his way into her life.. and soon her bed and her heart.
Loads of past drama, a smitten overbearing hero and a kind of complacent heroine.
At eighteen, Olivia Johnson had a brief, passionate affair with the infamous, rich socialite Dominic FitzCharles. Madly in love, she'd never forgotten him - even though it seemed he had forgotten her...
Now twenty-eight and a successful businesswoman, Olivia had no time for love affairs. When she met Dominic again at a society wedding, she vowed she'd stay in control. But Dominic had other ideas. He announced their engagement to the press - and in front of London's elite; just how was Olivia supposed to say no?
I don't mind the plot but I really didn't buy the romance. I also doubt both parents could have stopped all the communication. Why didn't the evil step mom come back? Why didn't future mother in law cause a stink? Her return was barely a ripple on the story. Wish there was more with the hero and heroine and more actual plot and conflict instead of outside forces pulling all the interesting events. Skip.
I enjoyed.rrading.this.particular.book . it had romance.and.humor which.makrs.very interesting reading. The book was more modern reading. I recommend this one to any romance lover.
3 Stars! ~ Seeing to the tiniest of details at the Church, wedding planner Olivia Johnson is horrified to see that the substitute best-man is none other than Dominic FitzCharles, the man who broke her tender naive 18 year old heart ten years before. When Dominic approaches Olivia at the reception, he’s taken by surprise by her cold and bitter response. But there’s not doubt to either of them that the attraction is just as strong as it ever was. So Dominic pursues her, and once they clear the air of what happened in the past, he sets out to seduce and marry her.
Although the chemistry between Dominic and Olivia is strong, this story lacks the intensity that I’ve come to love about the Presents line. This is a love story more suited for Romance or possibly Desire. Once the truth of the past comes out, there really is no conflict or spark left to the courtship, and from there on the story is rather flat.
This book never really seemed to have a plot. There was a teenage romance and then ten years later, she resisted him for all she's worth and you never really get a valid reason why. I love the Harlequin presents line, but you will be missing NOTHING if you pass on this book. Also, I didn't understand why, when her father died, she did not call her fiance for support. Why did the author choose to have him come back a day after the funeral and act like it was nothing? It didn't make sense.
