Dramocles: An Intergalactic Soap Opera

Rate this book
Dramocles, an ordinary king on an ordinary planet, finds himself thrust into an adventure that combines soap opera, Greek tragedy and Shakespearean drama as he unwillingly, and disastrously, seeks to fulfill a momentous destiny that is only revealed to him a piece at a time as he managed to foment an interplanetary war, precipitate the disintegration of his family, lose all his friends and uncover betrayal among his closest advisers as barbarian invaders besiege his realm.

Do you want a fun sci-fi reading experience?
This will go down well with Douglas Adams and maybe your favorite cocktail.
Think Mel Brooks with a brain.

What is destiny? What is it seriously tho. We will never get this cartoon/movie.

"Knowledge is something you can do something with. It can be converted into power. But understanding is a kind of powerlessness. Understanding is of something greater than yourself, something you can't manipulate, only accept."

The world needs more space operas and this is a doozy. So funny and bleak a super weird ending. I re-read it because I couldnt remember the ending. It's better the second time. Bob just gets me. He's just different and unapologetic about it. He could have easily created a series of these characters. His restraint was epic.

Treading the thin line between wheels-within-wheels mystery and shaggy dog story, this is dated but still justifies the jacket quote from Douglas Adams. I had forgotten almost the whole book since first reading it (the few exceptions inevitably including one of the mucky bits, plus the scene where two supporting characters try to engineer themselves a subplot to enhance their life expectancy), but there are definitely pastiches I wouldn't have registered as a kid, from Shakespeare to Robert E Howard - and I suspect a few I'm still missing now. And that lapse in memory seems fair enough given the whole plot, such as it is, rests on the listless monarch of the title learning that he has forgotten key details of his Destiny...which unfortunately oblige him to invade a friend's planet. Hijinks ensue.

Favourite quote: "Drusilla stood up, her face a field of dubiety across which the black hounds of fear chased the white fawns of hope." This book has some of greatest overdone expressions I have read
