I loved this. In the beginning of the novel, I was drawn in by Moshfegh’s intriguing main character, and her portrayals of thoughts we would usually never utter out loud.

The book stagnated for me a little in the middle, but was still entertaining and I’m so glad I stuck with it.

The end of the novel gave me the feeling of emerging from a cool lake on a summer’s evening, the water smoothing down your hair and dripping off your eyelashes. I felt renewed.

Pain is not the only touchstone for growth. I was soft and calm and felt things.

Quite possibly the most hatable and privileged main character, with a story that seemed to go on way longer than a year. Didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would, although the writing is easy to follow and sensory.

Dark and humorous. Sad. Lonely. It did get repetitive but maybe that’s part of the point. The end couple of chapters were particularly good.
