Fifty Hats That Changed the World lists the top 50 hats and headwear that have made a substantial impact in the world of fashion and design today. From Monomakh's Cap, an early fifteenth century Russian crown to Franc Fernandez's modern-day 2010 Helmet Headpiece, the book explores the designs that have turned heads over the years and the impact they've had on the fashion and design world.
Design Museum is a museum founded in 1989, located by the River Thames near Tower Bridge in central London, England. The museum covers product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. In 2007 the museum was listed by The Times newspaper as number two in their top five museums of the year.
Deyan Sudjic is the current Director of the museum. He succeeded Alice Rawsthorn in 2006. Unlike most large London museums, the entrance is not free, as it is not subsidised by the UK Arts Council. For this reason it operates as a registered charity, and all funds generated by ticket sales aid the museum in putting new exhibitions together. The museum attracts 200,000 visitors annually.
I think I knew maybe a dozen of these. I wondered how the ones I'd never seen actually changed the world - despite reading the text, I'm still unconvinced. I thought hats first came about as religious and status markers and was wondering where the Pope's mitre was. Nonetheless, this was an interesting and quick read. I'm interested in reading more books in this series.
As someone who loves and collects hats, this book was such a joy to read!
It was a quick read and very informative and insightful.
It really featured some iconic hats that truly changed the world--however some hats featured didn't feel like it "changed the world" if I didn't read the accompanying text.
It's essentially a photo album where each hat photo is accompanied by a couple of paragraphs of text. I wouldn't call most of the hats highlighted 'world-changing' but some were definitely widely worn or widely recognized. Interesting to thumb through, but nothing more than that.
I really like fashion, and to know more about hats(which is something that we don't see much)was very interesting, besides the fact that I have more references to draw.
