As seen in Despicable Me. I had to order a copy. My inner Gru is telling me incredulously that this is garbage. I like reading it?!

To which, all I can reply is: awwwww! It's so cute! Though I do have a more serious criticism. The finger puppets are stiffer than they appear in the movie, and I can't make them drink their milk. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
___________________________________________

OK, I have a solution to the stiff-kitten problem. You just bend them. I didn't really want to do it, since I suspect the card will break after a while, but then I guess I bring out the tape.

Anyway, I can now make the kittens drink, and anyone who's seen the movie will know how important that is.
___________________________________________

I am so stupid. But in case other potential readers are equally stupid, let me share my embarrassing discovery. The card that made the kittens so annoyingly stiff, and which had to be bent, should simply be removed. It looks like the back cover of the book, but it isn't! When you take it off, the real back cover is revealed. Though, confusingly, it looks exactly like the fake one. Anyway, without the card inside, the finger puppets are most satisfying. I put on a fake Russian accent and read the book to my test audience, who said I was quite adequately despicable.

With the mechanics solved, I can now give my attention to the more abstract question that has been tormenting me ever since I saw the movie. The book is clearly intended ironically, as a parody of this particular genre. But how old do you have to be to get the irony? I'm guessing that a bright four year old would probably appreciate the joke, but a three year old would take it literally... though maybe I'm underestimating today's sophisticated kids. Please let me know if your small children have seen Despicable Me, and how they reacted!

Hello, mere mortal humans. This is the feline version of Despicable Me addressing you.

Marvin brought home this book one day. He said I might like it and Manny was waiting for a review. First thing I noticed was that it had really thick pages. I figured Marvin thought I might not be able to chew up the cardboard pages so easily. Fine. I love a challenge. But then I saw the title, Sleepy Kittens. So I set aside demolition mode and read it. It was a really cute story about three kittens who didn't want to go to bed. Their mother brushes their fur, gives them a bowl of milk, and sings them a lullaby. Eventually the kittens go to sleep. The end.

Not exactly War and Peace, is it?

But it is a fun book with cute drawings. The really cool thing is that it comes with three finger puppets representing the three sleepy kittens. Plus there are three holes in the sturdy pages so your little br...er...child...can play out the plot. For instance when Mama gives them a bowl of milk they can pretend to drink the milk. It is probably the only time kids can play with their fingers in the milk and not get yelled at. I tried to place my paws in the puppets but my claws kept getting stuck. Now the three finger puppet kitties look like they got their chests ripped open.

However, despite my four stars for it being a really cute book, I feel I must warn parents about a potential problem. I am worried that, as the kids play with this book, they will get the idea that it is OK to put their fingers up Kitty's butt. This is not OK. This could result in a dangerous and potentially fatal situation, more so for the kid than the cat. I repeat. Sticking fingers up a cat's butt is not OK. But diligent monitoring by the caretaker should alleviate any disaster.

I wish to thank Manny Rayner for recommending this book to me. I guess you don't hate cats after all.

5 stars specifically because my daughters have both loved this book for years. I think its super boring but watching them play with the kitten finger puppets is a treat for my heart.

I only needed to know that this was featured in Despicable Me before my hand was already reaching for it on the shelf. Let’s just say what ensued afterwards was nothing short of internal turmoil.

“Wow! This...is garbage! You actually like this?” said the manly voice in my head with a surprisingly thick Russian accent.

“B-but,” I started to reason whilst distracted by the cardboard finger puppets. That’s when it hit me. This book was not the same as the one featured in the film. For one, the cardboard puppets were stiff and there was no brush attached. Sacrilegious! Anyone who’s seen the film will know how important the brush is. The kittens cannot go to sleep without having their fur brushed.

As the rage boiled within me, I heard that voice again through a misty haze. Dim at first but unmistakable. “This is liter-ature? A two-year old could have written this,” he said. “Urgh, I don’t like this book. This is going on forever,” he continued.

I unleashed the rage within me and roared back to silence him. “BUT,” I countered.

As much as I loved this book, One Big Unicorn is still by far my favourite. On another note, is anyone else excited about Despicable Me 2 coming out soon?

I just read this again and it took me a total of 5 minutes!

My boyfriend bought me this for my birthday (actually before he was my fella but he knew I loved Despicable Me, so that was a win for him!) and I do love it. The rhyme is cute and the pictures are quite adorable.

However, and it is a big one, my hands are too small to play with the kittens properly. It actually hurts, and I know that I'm not the only one to struggle, so it was clearly not just me having weenie hands!

Fun for all the family. It does suffer from a lack of minions though!!!

Okay. There are puppets?! You use them to tell the story. Wow. Let's get this over with. This is garbage. A brush?! This is literature?! A two-year old could have written this. Keep reading.

Heh. Actually, I love, love, love this book. When I read it to my daughter I try to do it in Gru's voice. So much fun. If you're a fan of the movie, Despicable Me, GET THIS BOOK. It's cuter than a barrel of minions.

Summary
This is a sweet story about 3 kittens who are going through their nighttime routine. The books ends on them falling asleep to their mother's lullaby.

Evaluation
I like how this book is from a movie that most kids have seen and can relate to. If children can make a connection with a book to their own lives, they are most likely to remember the book and be engaged during the reading.

Teaching Idea
I would use this book in a lesson about sequence of events. I would like for them to listen to the book and then practice putting the events in order. This is a Kindergarten or 1st grade level book so I would make sure to keep the activity age appropriate.

After watching Despicable Me, my grandchildren kept requesting this delightful little book. We have had fun reading it and making the little kitten finger puppets follow the storyline. My 5yo grandson enjoys trying to read along and copy Gru. My granddaughter, 3yo, was very upset that there wasn't a brush/comb as in the movie for the kittens to brush their fur. I remedied this by finding a Barbie brush which I affixed so that she could do this. The puppets are also on the stiff side so they are slightly difficult for little fingers to operate. I am sure after many uses this will cease. Overall, a great little book with just a few flaws.

Board book with three adorable little kittens to help your toddler to go to sleep... sure!

From the kids (and adult) movie "Despicable Me", you can play the part of Gru, reading a good night story to his three girls.

Synopsis: "An adorable board book with finger puppets based on a book featured in the animated movie, Despicable Me, coming from Universal Studios in Summer 2010. With gentle, rhythmic verse, little ones will love to snuggle up with these soft, cozy kitties at bedtime."

My Review: I was so excited when I found this book, I adore the movie Despicable Me and this book was super cute in the movie. The quality of the book isn't quite what I expected. The kitten puppets are rough and stiff and there was no brush attached to the book to brush the kittens but other than that it is still the very cute story Gru read to the girls.

Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, Sleepy Kittens (LB Kids, 2010)

If you (a) liked Despicable Me and (b) have kids—maybe even if you don't—then it should go without saying that you probably need a copy of this (it's the book, complete with kitten finger puppets, that Gru reads to the girls at night). If you've seen the movie, you know the whole book, but so what? It was wonderful in the movie, it's wonderful IRL. What are you waiting for? ***

It's such an adorable book, with a very rhythmic story that's fun to read out aloud. I do wish it were more like the book in the movie, with the little brush and all. The kitties in this book are on the stiff side and it's difficult to use when your hands aren't the same size as its designed for. But that aside, daughter really loves this book, especially the bits where the kitties are drinking milk.

Saw Despicable Me about a month ago and Loved IT. When I saw this book laying on a random cart at Borders I had to have it. My two year old niece kept clapping her hands and begging me to read it again.

The only drawback is that the kitten puppets are awkward to move- but that might change the more we read it.

A friend gifted this to me for Christmas. I absolutely love this book. It brings back childhood memories of another children's book I had that also had a finger puppet :)

When I watch the 'Despicable Me' movie I make sure I have my copy of Sleepy Kittens with me. My only criticism is there is no brush to brush their fur ;)

When I saw the book in Despicable Me, I knew I had to get it for my wee man. been reading it to him every night since he was 2 months old, and he still loves it. Now he crawls towards me when I pick the book up. It's sweet and cute with catchy rhymes, but I too was disappointed to find there wasn't a mini brush to groom the kittens with. :-( At least I can still make them drink their milk.
