A great book for early grades, each page has minimal text so students could enjoy looking at the illustrations. I would pair this book with additional Hawaiian literature since this book doesn't show case the full culture of Hawaii.

Goodnight Hawaiian Moon by Dr. Carolan and Joanna F. Carolan tells the story of the Hawaiian Islands getting ready for sleep. The book is told through short rhyming stanzas instead of long sentences or paragraphs. This literary element gives the story movement and rhythm. The story relies heavily on illustrations. Each subject in the particular stanza is compared as it is the day and how it is at night. The illustrations support the differences as they depict the subjects during the different times of the day. The illustrations are also done in watercolors with makes for beautiful pictures and bring out the natural beauty found on the Hawaiian Islands. As the students read or listen to the story they can see the difference each plant or animal looks during the night and during the day. They also learn about the Hawaiian Islands by the introduction to new animals and new plants. The book is also accompanied by a CD that plays the song “Brahms’s Lullaby” in Hawaiian with Hawaiian instruments. This can be played to the students to teach them more about the subject of the story. This book is a great teaching tool for students who have never been to Hawaii and want to learn more about the islands and their culture.

The book is beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated. The boys I babysit love this book, in part because of their Hawaiian heritage, but also in part because the book is just gorgeous. And, like so many people who don't live in tropic regions, they find the landscapes and seascapes captivating.

We did not have a chance to listen to the lullabies on the attached CD, but the boys had heard them before and they're beautiful in both English and Hawaiian. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to help their kids sleep.

The book is written as a goodnight story for children. The author does a great job writing the story to rhyme and one can tell his words are truly written for children.

The art is also absolutely exquisite and definitely captures the love the illustrator has for her home on Kaua'i. The creators also go a step further by adding musical and poetic combinations from local island natives.

Nighttime illustrations, short, lyrical narrative and wonderful Hawaiian-themed lyrics to Brahm's lullaby at the end make this a soothing and calming book to read at bedtime.

Loved this book and anything that reminds me of Hawaii! A great lesson in how other parts of the world look and what kinds of animals you can see there that are different from where we live.

Everyone is transported into a tropical dreamland with Dr. Carolan's lyrical text. There is a cd to play along with the book! It is a solid bedtime book or just a book to help calm a group down. It's filled with fun and enjoyable rhymes! The illustrations are so beautiful! I loved the fact that their is a cd to play alongside the book! I could easily see myself using this book as a traditional "end of the day" ritual. The book is calming and could leave the day on a positive note!
