I didn't enjoy the first book of the series that is true but this one is pretty good actually, non-stop action, great romance and more intel on that creepy organization that is experimenting on people, what is not to like.

Roxanne "Razor" works for Edge, usually in corporate espionage and she is wealthy and because of that she has hard time trusting people and her parents indifference when she was kidnapped didn't help. She has had only one person she can rely on, all her life, her friend Jake and when she finds out he maybe in trouble she will do whatever she can.

Tanner is new to Edge and his first assignment is to baby-sit Razor since someone seems to be following her. He needs the job, fresh out of army, he has his hands full dealing with an elder brother who doesn't seem to trust him and the loss of his father and younger brother and the family's financial problem. Tanner is a stand-up guy that takes his responsibilities seriously and that means protecting Roxanne whether she wants it or not.

They soon find themselves landing in a conspiracy that dates back years, involving many members of the Edge who were experimented on when they were kids and can't remember.

In the middle of all this danger and trying to find Jake there is this big attraction between Roxanne and Tanner, which Tanner tries hard to fight.

I loved the book, the sexiness and the danger and I hated the villain(s) and can't wait for them to be brought down and poor Clay and Jake, I can't wait to read about them more.

I jumped into this series starting with book two because it was available as an ebook from my library. I thought I'd take a chance to see if the Edge series was worth pursuing. For me, it is. Now, I plan to back up and start with the first in the series, Living on the Edge.

Here is a simplistic summary of the book: The plot focuses on Roxanne "Razor" Haught who is an agent with Edge security. After her recent mission fails, her boss Bella assigns her a "babysitter" named Tanner, who is ex-special forces and newly hired at Edge. The crux of the book centers on Razor's search for her closest childhood friend, Jake, who is enlisted in the military and has been recruited to join a covert group that he believes will allow him to continue to serve his country. However, the members of this group become unwilling test subjects in a sinister project to produce killer soldiers, brainwashed to mindlessly follow commands.

Once Razor discovers Jake is in danger, she and Tanner, along with other members of Edge team work to find him and expose those responsible for what becomes known as the Threshold Project. The chemistry between Tanner and Roxanne kept me engaged and motivated to keep reading to see how their relationship will develop. There is no nice tidy ending here only more questions and anticipation for what's next. Edge of Sanity continues the plot line.

OK, I wanted to love this books, I really did. But....I just didn't. There I said it, it is in black and white and I can't take it back. I love SKB's books, especially her Sentinel Wars series, so it is very painful when I have to give an author I love a poor grade. But Roxanne and Tanner didn't have very much substance to me. Roxanne came off as spoiled, despite her background and Tanner just laid down once too often for his brother Reid. He should have been knocking him on his butt for some of the remarks he made. He blamed Tanner for not being there when their brother and dad died and told him that. I can understand that attitude if Tanner was out partying the night away, but he was in the military defending your freedom dude! So his attitude made absolutely no sense. There was alot of that in this book. The romance between Rox and Tanner was thin and they fell in love in less then a week, so that didn't really work for me. However, the suspense piece was pretty good and I am looking forward to seeing who is up next for the love shack and how Evil is going to be taken down. I will be continuing the series and for me I hope this was just a glitch to better books down the road.

I haven't read the first book in this series, but I don't think I suffered from it. I was able to tell that the underlying plotline of the series is that some kids were experimented on, a la Fringe and Lisa Marie Rice's Heart of Danger (which was actually published after Razor's Edge, but I read it before this one). I finally got around to this one because I have the next book waiting for me.

I couldn't help but compare this to Lora Leigh's Black Jack. The plots differed, but the characters were familiar. Historicals and Romantic Suspense have to be unique for me to really enjoy them, and Razor's didn't exactly fit that description. I did think the way Butcher handled Jake was different. I also liked that Butcher has so far resisted adding an element of the paranormal to the people who'd been experimented on.

Edge of Sanity looks like it'll be better than Razor's. Clay's the hero and I would've thought Mia would have been his heroine, but apparently not. I am a sucker for a damaged hero and Clay looks all kinds of screwed up.

Razor and Tanner search for clues to locate her childhood friend Jake while trying their best not to act on the explosive chemistry between them.

A losing battle of course which combined with the seriously dangerous task before them makes for a combination that gives readers exactly what one looks for in a romantic suspense.

At least for this reader it did.

RAZOR’S EDGE by Shannon K. Butcher

RAZOR’S EDGE, released November 2011, is the second book in The Edge series by Shannon K. Butcher. A romantic suspense series, The Edge novels focus on a group of elite, military trained personnel who have all been ‘conditioned’ and ‘trained’ as killing machines, and are somehow linked to a 20 year old experimental operation known as The Threshold Project. The Threshold Project was a failure that left many children, who are now adults, on the brink of psychological collapse and physical destruction. The Edge is a private security company backed by Payton Bainbridge and owner Bella Bayne. The Edge series is eerily similar to the premise behind Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series.

Roxanne ‘Razor’ Haught is a operative working for The Edge.--A group of trained security experts, in the field of military and corporate espionage. But when an assignment goes wrong, Razor’s supervisor Bella Bayne is pissed. Razor is assigned a partner, a babysitter in one—Tanner O’Connell. An ex-military man, Tanner has returned state side, on compassionate leave, due to a family accident, that killed his father and brother, Tanner needs this job, to help pay for his mother’s expenses and his sister in laws family and children. So under the guise of training, Razor is expected to train Tanner in the ways of The Edge.

With her ego hurting, Razor makes several attempts to elude Tanner, and takes him on a wild ride through downtown Dallas, but a burglary that destroys her childhood home, and an explosion that rocks her new place turn a lesson in self-pity, into a search and rescue. Razor realizes that she has become a target. When a mysterious, encrypted email arrives, from her best friend Jake Staite, Razor knows that something is wrong. With Jake currently on an undercover assignment, Razor is unsure, whether the message can be true. Having not heard from Jake in months, and not knowing with which branch of security Jake is now working, Razor suspects that Jake is in trouble.

We are introduced to Clay, a fellow Edge team mate, who is showing symptoms of abnormal behavior, and Reid, Tanner’s brother. The anger between the brother’s regarding their father and brother’s death, places the team members in the unwanted position on the sidelines. But when Reid admonishes Tanner for his relationship with Razor, we see a side to the brothers, that reveals more jealousy than hate. Tanner and Razor’s relationship has gone beyond partners to lovers, against company policy, and with the knowledge, that both are equally aggressive with their assignments, the others are once again, forced to watch as their team mates, play a game of cat and mouse with each other.

As a prolific reader of all things Christine Feehan, I could not help but make the comparisons between THE EDGE series and the Ghostwalkers. Although each has its’ own distinctive storylines, characters and events, The Threshold Project with its’ use of young children, and now adults, is comparable to Dr. Whitney’s experiments on young girls and the Ghostwalker Teams.

Razor’s Edge is a fast paced novel that encompasses both action and military style operations. Razor and Tanner’s relationship builds quickly, as the two are put into the difficult situation of guarding each other 24/7, but their chemistry is strong and not without its’ moments of lust and love. Razor is written as a strong-willed, tough character, who is continuously risking her own life, as well as those of the men around her. The Edge and its’ team members have plenty of opportunity and future storylines, to search for those men and women who were once and now continue to be part of The Threshold Project.

Quick read for all the time it took me to finish it. The action is fairly non-stop so events fly by rather quickly. Some of them are very "hellz yes, take THAT" and others will leave you saying "what....the HELL." But it's all a continued story of a series meant to keep you hooked and ready for the next volume because you want answers, damn it, and certain things NEED to be FIXED. NOW!

I believed the attraction between the two main leads (Roxanne 'Razor' and Tanner), but wasn't completely sold on how quickly they felt they fell in the forever-kind-of-love. I was more invested in the friendship with Roxanne and Jake whom she's known since childhood and is fiercely each other's family -- that relationship I believed in (not romantically, just how deep it was).

An intriguing part of a series for [me] not starting at the beginning.

Second in the Edge romantic suspense series based on the employees of The Edge in Dallas, Texas. The couple focus is on Roxanne "Razor" Haught and Tanner O'Connell.

My Take
These guys were nuts! Any chances they had to escape, they should have taken them no matter who they had to leave behind if only so they could get help and get back to free them faster!! And then the crap that Tanner lets Razor get away with. Oh man...I just want to tie that girl up and slap a gag on her!

Somebody's slipping...in Living on the Edge, the first book in the series, Tanner is already working for The Edge; now, Butcher claims he's the new guy. Although, to be fair, Bella does claim that most everyone is out on missions and she doesn't note the characters who are in that first book so maybe this one is concurrent with the first…?

WTF?? How can the guys think that the bad guys aren't going to thoroughly check Tanner out for tracking devices, etc.?? I'd'a thought they'd have had some hot tech gadgets that would get around this kind of scrutiny!

Nah, it just bugged me up the wazoo that Butcher got lazy and went for the overdone clichés just so she can get through the really dramatic action at the end. It was enough of a cliché that Tanner got all protective about Roxanne and it did make sense. Guys are just wired that way. Especially honorable men like Tanner. But her capture, Tanner's takedowns, and the eventual rescue was just too easy.

The Story
Roxanne just can't keep her mind on the job. Her ex-boyfriend keeps sending guys to follow her, harass her and Bella makes her take the week off work and get him sorted out. With the new guy along as babysitter. Can you say "not happenin"? No way is Razor letting some kid tag along with her, gettin' all up in her face. Only, she's not taking Tanner and his special op skills into account.

The Characters
Roxanne Haught specializes in stealth security protection for The Edge. She has no family left except Jake, her best friend from childhood. Jake Staite believes he is participating in a top-secret unit protecting his country.

Tanner O'Connell has retired from the military.

The Edge is…
…a private security firm started up by Bella Bayne (on the List) with an infusion of cash from the contrite Payton Bainbridge. Other employees include Reid O'Connell who recommended his baby brother, Clay Marshall (on the List), Mira Sage (on the List), Sloane Gideon (on the List)), and Dr. Vaughan.

Brad Evans was one of Jake's. Other buddies of Jake's include Trevor Moss and Alan MacKenzie.

Payton is now paying in more ways than one for his participation. General Robert Norwood was involved as well.

Threshold Project is…
…still going on with Dr. Norma Stynger, a nightmare walking, using drugs and brainwashing techniques, changing men who have been recruited into this "hush-hush operation" on the basis of protecting the United States. It's all for profit. Jordyn is her daughter. Nelson Bower has signed up for Dr. Stynger's operation. He'll show the military what they're missing when they kicked him out.

The Cover
The cover is reds, yellows, and browns with a back-to-back couple dressed in camos and Kevlar packin' heat.

The title is all about Razor's Edge and the line she walks.

Razor’s Edge by Shannon K. Butcher
Romantic Suspense–Nov. 1st, 2011
4 stars

Roxanne “Razor” Haught will do anything to find Jake, her oldest childhood friend and the brother she never had. When she received his diary mysteriously and a coded message telling her to burn the diary, she knows that he is in danger. Unfortunately, her boss has assigned a newbie partner for her to babysit. Tanner O’Conner is seriously attracted to Roxanne and wants to help and protect her while she searches for Jake, but can Roxanne learn to rely and trust Tanner? The trouble is Tanner could be too hot for her too handle...

Roxanne is tough but not stupidly stubborn. I really like the chemistry and camaraderie between Tanner and Roxanne. She’s willing to take his suggestions and quickly realizes how valuable Tanner’s help is. Also, her loyalty to Jake is admirable. Tanner is a good match for Roxanne. Like her, he is very family oriented even though he’s having trouble communicating with them. I can’t help but feel so sorry for Tanner and a little bit sad that his own brother doesn’t seem to appreciate him.

The likeable characters together with a fast and furious plot creates a gripping, action-packed read. Highly recommended for readers looking for some mystery/action to go with the romance!

"Never judge a book by its cover". What amazing words to live by. Being a Military spouse, I didn't think anything could surprise me.

Razor and Tanner are so compatible together that they leave you wondering just how two people like them could come together. Razor is amazing in her own right. Working in the undercover field and being trained in all that she is trained for, you would think facing the hostage situation involving her best friend would be a breeze right? Wrong. In comes Tanner O'Connell. Being assigned to watch over her, he is drug along in the scheme she develops to save Jake.

The story that unfolds between Tanner and Razor is one that leaves you guessing. Will they, or won't they? Right when you think they realize their feelings for one another, BAM! something happens. They both have so much to face, own up to and let go of, that they can't seem to get a handle on the important things that are in front of them.

The plot itself is full of twist, turns and OH MY GOSH! moments! Within her own agency, there are people who know secrets on what is going on, but Razor is left in the dark. Loyalty is the name of the game in this book. There was never a dull moment during this book. The plot stayed true all the way to the surprising end!

If you like books that make you want to page turn until you read it all in one sitting, this is a book for you!

About a Series

I wanted so badly to rate this novel 3 stars, but not because it was not a good story with Tanner, Roxanne and Jake as compelling characters that made me care. No, the reason was that the first two characters of the series, Lucas and Sloane, were no shows. Sloane was mentioned a couple times by her dad in passing. Lucas not at all. All the unanswered questions left by the somewhat abrupt but sweet ending of the first novel in the Edge series would be answered in the second, right? Didn't happen. Not even close. When will writers of series with a different couple the focus in each novel realize that continuity of characters is as important as continuity of plot. The heartbreaking story of Jake being taken by the Threshold Project, and the lengths Roxanne (Razor), his best friend and all-but-blood sister, goes to in order to save him kept me reading and caring, as did the sacrificial way Tanner protected, supported and cared for Roxanne as they faced danger and grew into love. But as I move onto novel 3 of the series, do I have any hope of learning how these characters I've invested in as a reader work out the messy details of being together? Or what happens to Jake? Not much at all. I already feel cheated.

As a standalone novel 4 stars; as a series continuation, 3 stars.

An entertaining, fast-paced story.

My only gripe was the heroine's total denial of certain facts and details going on around her. Razor's being followed, but refuses to acknowledge the danger. Her house gets broken into, but it's probably just kids. Her friend Jake has been abducted and brainwashed, but no way would he really hurt her. After a while, it became exhausting.

Thank god Tanner was there to be the voice of reason - he comes off as the source of sanity in a crazy situation.

Other than that, the backstories were well done, the emotional parts were good, and both the individual and larger plots moved along well. Looking forward to the next installment.

I normally like this author's books better than this one. I liked the relationship that was developing between Razor/Roxanne and Tanner. I also loved how devoted Roxanne was to her friend Jake and he to her. I also like how the employees at The Edge work with and support each other. What didn't work for me in this book was the bad guy/conspiracy. I have seen something similar in other books that were done better. Will I keep reading this series, probably as the relationships in the books are worth it.

DNF!
While trying to read Razor's Edge (without finishing Living on the Edge might I add, as it's part of the same series and this is the second book) I constantly felt like I was missing a massive part of the storyline with the heroine Roxanne/Razor yet everything was laid out with the hero Tanner. So either I missed out because I didn't read the first book, I missed it because it was laid out for the reader later on and couldn't stick with the storyline or it was all in my head!

Every time I think Shannon K. Butcher cannot write a better novel, she proves me wrong. "Razor's Edge" kept me on the edge the entire time. The situations were very intense and I loved the tension between Roxanne and Tanner. Even with both sets of luggage, they were able to get past their problems and their past and work together as a team. You cannot help but love how strong and supportive Tanner is to Roxanne. I need more!

This is a new author to me. I just picked up another of her books from the library as I am not sure what to think yet. I like strong characters and in general these two fit the bill on that front. But sometimes I felt like perhaps the female character wasn't as strong as she should be considering her job. I figure once I get through another book I will understand if this is an author I will continue with.

Another great installment in this series. As Roxanne tries to recover from a mission that went wrong and help a childhood friend, she's assigned a trainee who she knows is there to keep an eye on her. Except she finds herself wanting to keep her eyes on the trainee, Tanner. As circumstances surrounding them rise to a feverish pitch, Tanner and Roxanne have to find a way to save her friend Jake while also nurturing the feelings growing between them. A great balance of action and romance.

I liked book 1 so much better. Roxanne and Tanner both seemed less competent than I would have expected and the team in general didn't strike me as anything special, though I am definitely intrigued by Gage and Clay.

I am definitely interested in what happens next with recovering the people on The List, so will definitely be looking for book 3

Two books into this series and I really like it. There's action and suspense as well as the relationship between Roxanne and Tanner. Again I found the male character more appealing than the female. At least Roxanne was not nearly as annoying as Sloane (book #1). I think (and hope) that we haven't seen the last of Jake.

As soon as I finished Edge #1, I had to dive right in to the second and it didn't disappoint. The story thread started in the first continued on through the second, with even more twists and turns. I can't wait to start book 3 as I'm sure it will continue to build and surprise me.
