I was impressed to find such a clear, concise, readable summary of what is, after all, a necessarily murky subject. Trying to understand what the Shang believed when our only primary sources for the period are the oracle bones is always going to be fraught, but Keightley does an excellent job of teasing out the underlying ideas the divination charges imply, without getting too bogged down in linguistic arguments. I also appreciated his use of climate and geographic data to provide a more literal picture of the world in which the Shang kings lived. Four stars instead of five because it is also in a lot of ways a very basic sketch.
