I enjoyed reading this book for my African-American history class. I wish I had bought it instead of renting it. Even though I'm a history major, I'm guilty of focusing on certain areas of history and ignoring others. This is an area that I only know a little about even though I'm American and enjoy reading about the history of my nation up to World War I, after that it's to "new" for me. I was glad that I took this class and that the book was so interesting, I have added more books about the history of African Americans to my TBR list because of it.

Even though it's a history textbook, it's very readable and moves quickly. Even though I was a history minor, most of this text was new to me--a sad commentary on the biased state of affairs our textbooks and history curricula have become.
