Where Will You Go from Here? This book is by Valerie Burton she is a personal and executive coach. She writes in this book to people who have been in that moment when Bam!
1. You lost a spouse
2. You lost your job.
3. You have a health issue.
I am sure you have been there when the unexpected and unwanted event happens and you left thinking what am I going to do? We this author will help you with this. She will give you five commitments to follow. I am not going to lie they are not always easy commitments for example I will not feel sorry for myself. I know if you are like me you are thinking really, I have been there, there done that and bought that t-shirt. Through out the book you will find stories about the author’s life (which by the way has been not bed of roses) and others. I have to say after reading about some of the stories I though maybe my problems are not so bad. This book is one that for me was a reminder more than fresh ideas. What I liked about the book is that the author reminds us to know that all things work together for good and to use your power of prayer. I found that she also had a lot of great Bible verses spread through out the book. I liked that at the end of the chapters she even has homework a section where she asks question and leaves space to write your answers. I like that on page 90 you also have character strengths a reminder if you will to take stock to see what you have and what you might want to work on. The book also has sections called You Have Everything You Need. It is exercises to get you going and in a positive way. I feel this is a very good read for the time we are in. I think at this stage in life I have read several books and done several Bible studies that are on this subject and this was it a good read when compared. It is my opinion this is great for those starting out in the job world and can not find a job and have those college bills piling in. I really believe it will help. I give this book 3 1/2 star. The way I rate my books are on a star system, one star is the worst and five stars is the best. I received this complementary book from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for my review. The opinions are my own in this review.

Great book to have when you are in transition, after the death of a loved one or a relationship, the end of a job, an accident or a devastating illness or life-changing diagnosis. Where Will You Go From Here uses the wisdom of the Bible as well as that of the counselor and coach. Ms. Burton's approach takes a very calm, common-sense look at where people are in the midst of a crisis and helps them work out the next steps. You can tell that Ms. Burton has been "in the ditch", as she puts it, and can relate to someone who is there. The advice is solid and inspirational. Working through the questions at the ends of the chapters helps you to really think through your situation, what led you to it and what is the best way to proceed out of your ditch and on with the rest of your life. This book came to me at a transition point in my own life and I have found it to be a great tool. It helped me to look at my situation calmly and rationally and to really think about what got me there, which is essential to moving forward.

This book can best be summarized as when life throws you a curve ball, keep fighting your way through focusing on your faith, using a positive mindset and don’t be afraid to revise your plan. I will surmise that this book will mean more to someone who is currently in a tumultuous situation. The book wasn’t too long and it wasn’t too preachy. It was just right.

First, I have to admit that I don’t subscribe to the whole “life-coach” thing. I wouldn’t pay someone to tell me what to do, be my cheerleader and create a life strategy for me (I have a mother for that). But for those who do, this book is a great resource for them. This book is full of encouragement, sprinkled with biblical principles for guidance.

The author also interspersed the book with inspirational stories from an assortment of people who faced misfortunes/hardships in their life. As I read the personal stories, I keep saying “wow!” For example, the author relayed a story in which her mother encouraged her to use a positive mindset because the power over life and death is in the tongue. I must say that I found most of the stories to be inspiring. In fact, my husband related to the passage on Roland Martin, a journalist that he watches on CNN. He kept saying to me, you can’t tell what that man went through looking at his ascots today. Those stories are a testament on the fact that we don’t know what struggles people have overcome to be where they are.

I encourage everyone, whether you are a positive thinker or not, to print out her 5 commitments and every month, repeat it to yourself.

1. I will not feel sorry for myself
2. I will not stare at the closed door
3. I will dig deep to unearth all the courage I need
4. I will direct my thoughts-my thoughts will not direct me
5. I will choose to believe all things work together for the good.

Most of what the author writes is true, self-pity and continual looking at the past will keep you in your ditch a lot longer than necessary. One thing that I would add is that a great support system can be invaluable in times of hardship.
I recommend this book to those who tend to see the glass half-empty. This book will provide the emotional pick up that can motivate their fighting spirit. Retraining one’s thought process, along with faith in GOD, is a recipe for perseverance and eventual success.

I received this book free from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

I was surprised at how many questions and concerns I have or have had were answered in this book. I do not believe in coincidences so I was meant to read this book not only to review for Waterbrook's reader program called Blogging for Books. First I perused the book before diving in and found that as you jump around you can still follow Burton's compassionate advice. I did decide to start from the beginning and read and participate in the author's suggested activities. I do feel better now but also believe that changes come slow just as results. If you are honest and brave to look at your fears you will get results.

Burton lays everything out step by step which is easy to follow and do. First you must agree with following the 5 commitments which will help build courage to face challenges and be able to accept success as you pass through challenges. I was following some of Burton's advice but she makes it simple and easy to follow as well understand to make active changes.

I have told mental health associates about this book as well as members of my church because I feel this book works. As stated earlier I received this book as part of a reading program from Waterbrook publisher's called Blogging for Books and am not required to give a positive review.

When I won this book from the Giveaways section in Goodreads, I was unprepared for its agenda. To be fair, while this book does contain good advice about how to constructively look at how your life has led you to this point, and how to inspire yourself to get past this and figure out what to do next, neither the initial description of the book nor the back of the book prepared me for the fact that this an extremely (Christian) faith-based approach.

The further I read the book, the more it turned into a "And you *must* put your faith in the Lord, for He has evidently chosen another path for you!" kind of book. I do not enjoy sneakily evangelic books, and felt the amount of preaching kept interfering with the message that this book had to offer. Others may not mind as much, so I have marked this book as available on my Bookcrossing page and hope someone else can get more out of this.

When life's unexpected challenges knock you down, it can be a difficult road to recovery. Whether it's a health challenge, a broken marriage, financial troubles or something on a smaller scale, Where Will You Go from Here will help you find your way out of the ditch. Full of inspirational stories of triump and the tips you need to help you get back to the person you need to be.

I love the fact that alot of this book is based on principals found throughout the Bible. Very understandable and packed with questions to help you discover exactly what you need to do and how you need to do it. If you're in a "ditch" right now this book is sure to help you.

I recieved this book through a Goodreads Giveaway, and I am so glad that I did. It changed my outlook on what had happenned to me in the previous 2 years from my firing to my lengthy unemployment and all that went with it. I have a sense of peace and purpose. I passed the book onto a friend who is finding the same peace and purpose to meet her needs.

I received this book for free from the Goodreads first-read giveaway. A good self help book for when really bad things happen to you. Lots of short stories of people who "had it all, lost it all" then came back strong.

A wonderful book, especially if you find yourself in a slump (or are still on the rebound from one). Even if your life is "perfect," this book will help you prepare for whatever pitfalls may cross your path in the future.

I saw Burton speak at a conference this year. I liked the content in her presentation, so I wanted some more depth to it. I subscribed to everything I could on her website, and then went to see which of her books I could get from the library. There weren't a lot of choices, so I went with this one first.
The premise of this one is to help people who have experienced a setback, i.e. loss of job, relationship, or health. I don't think it was exactly the content I was looking for more about, but it was good content to be reminded of. Emphasis on the "reminded" as I cannot say I learned a lot from this book. That said, it does have a LOT of great, purposeful questions that could be used to help understand ourselves and our situation better. I'm excited to use them as journal-writing prompts.
Not obvious from the book descriptions I've seen, but a good amount of the content is God/Christian religious. Before I read this, I knew Burton also speaks and writes on faith-based topics, so I wasn't completely surprised by it. However, if one is not in some way connected to those motivations then it is hard to apply some of the content to oneself.
At this point (after reading only one of her books) I wouldn't recommend starting here unless you are deeply stuck due to an unexpected change in life. I'm going to keep trying her other books to see if I can find more about the topics I'm looking for.

I received this book through the Early Reviewers program, and honestly wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading it. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised - it was an easy yet thought-provoking read. If you are at a place in your life where something has knocked you off course, this would be a great book for you. Please note, much of Burton's counseling is Bible- and faith-based. If you have a strong Christian faith this book will resonate with you, but if consistent reference to prayer and Bible text puts you off, this is not the book for you. All in all a good read and a good addition to the self-help canon.

After suffering a tragic loss in my life, followed by a long period of despair, I turned to this book as an additional source to look for direction and redirection of my anger and frustration with the then current events in my life.

I’m very grateful for the material provided in this book coaching me a way to move forward and I still take the valuable advice to heart guiding me when I seek to return to my former ways. Highly recommend in the cases of grief and loss due to circumstances beyond our control.

Over the years, I have heard great things about Valorie Burton, and her writing. There are stories to see how faith and trust persevered. The nuggets can be helpful to keep you going forward.

p 154-55: Look for Growth Opportunities Hidden in your Loss. Inspire others. "Don't fall into the trap of comparing your new opportunities with your old opportunities." Focus on the benefits. Setbacks have a comeback, opportunities for growth. Unexpected setbacks that we are to exercise faith on a higher level. 156. Romans 8:37.

Enjoyed the read, will return to Library.
