DANCER OFF HER FEET is an incredible true story that stands as an irrefutable witness to God's power to heal people both physically and spiritually. It has inspired and encouraged many thousands of people since its first publication in 1991. This edition contains a foreword written twelve years on, which brings Julie's story up to date and details the highs and lows she has since experienced. For three years, former ballet dancer Julie Sheldon was stricken with the neurological disease Dystonia, and her life hung in the balance. Crippled, enduring fierce muscle spasms, she was in intensive care when Canon Jim Glennon prayed for her. 'A corner was turned after that visit in June 1989, and by July I was out of hospital. In August I was out of the wheelchair and off crutches for good, and in September off all drugs. All the time there was this conviction of total healing, not just of the body but of the mind and spirit as well.' The news hit press headlines and amazed 'Julie has made a miraculous recovery,' said a professor of neurology. Julie herself would say, along with family and friends, that God has done a great deal more even than that.
A very encouraging, realistic story of recovery dealing with the daily grind of illness and despair through the eyes of a Christian with immense faith who is, nevertheless, an ordinary human being experiencing the dark depression such illness can bring.
As I read this book, I could think of several Christian friends for whom it could be a great encouragement and blessing at their time of illness.
This review is from: Dancer Off Her Feet (Paperback) I met Julie Sheldon before I read Dancer off her Feet. Julie is a beautiful, vivacious woman, filled with optimism and life. Her story, therefore, was almost a shock to me. How could the lovely, lively woman I met have come through the horrific punishment visited upon her by the neurological disease Dystonia? The details of the disease's progress, a disease that stopped a blossoming ballet career right in its tracks, chill the blood. But they are made somehow digestible by the intermittent accounts of a loving family life, a fascinating insight into the rigours of ballet training, and the introduction of Canon Jim Glennon through whose intercession Julie was granted a miraculous healing.
This is a fascinating story, written with professional skill. Parts of it are harrowing to read but totally absorbing. The faith and spirit that shines through the entire story are remarkable and can only encourage the reader to ponder the faith that led to hope and the hope that led to healing. A wonderful story and one that I would recommend most strongly to anyone who enjoys inspirational reading.
A beautiful story of miraculous healing. It was painful for me to read some of the medical struggles. There were lots of details of young adult life that were perhaps not relevant to the story and some that were lost on a non-British reader. But the book was definitely worth reading (for me) if only for the reminder of God's constant presence and ability to heal body and spirit.
