David Kirk is the creator of children's books that follow the character Miss Spider. Before writing books, he made colorful toys that were sold in hand-painted boxes. He was urged to write children's books when his toys caught the interest of a book packager. It wasn't difficult to figure out what he would use as characters in his stories: his daughter, Violet, had a liking for bugs.

Miss Spider has some baby spiders ready to hatch and she is scared she isn't prepared and isn't going to be the best mom she wants to be. After they have hatched, the little spiders came across a rather large egg that didn't have a momma near by. Baby Squirt took to this egg and set off to find its momma. He tried to leave the egg with the snake, but it wasn't the snakes egg. He then went on and ended up getting lost trying to find its mother. Miss Spider and Holley set out to find Squirt because he had been gone for so long. Holley still said he was proud of Squirt for trying to help someone out and that's brave. Squirt met two dragonflies along the way and also a stinkbug that told the baby spider the egg belonged to a hen. As soon as they placed the egg back, mom spider came in and swooped Squirt up and saved him from the barn animals. His parents invited everyone back to the house, including the dragonflies and stinkbug for looking after Squirt and making friends. I liked this book for kindergarteners through third grade because it shows them what determination is. It is nice to teach students how to go out of their way and help others when they need help. I think the students would enjoy this book and I think it teaches a good lesson. I also thought that the illustrations were very nice and the bright and bold colors stood out to me on the pages. I would put this book in my library in my classroom.

Miss Spider is rather nostalgic for me, but I have to say the illustrations bug me a little bit looking at them as an adult. They have the potential to get so so so so so dated since they are clearly digital and look like a video game.

As for the story: it's okay, but I do think it gets a little cheesy. Especially when Miss Spider raises her children for like half a second before one of them takes off and somehow that means she raised him well. Somehow, though, I don't hate it.

The lovable baby spider Wiggle feels responsible for a hen's egg he found, so he's lucky to find three bandit bugs to help out. Things coulda been worse.

This story is cute but is missing some transitions.
