I'd give this book a 2, but my kids gave it a 4 so we're compromising with a 3.
I thought the text choppy and disjointed. At times it was confusing. Things didn't flow well. And it could be a little scary for kids - a girl gets kidnapped and the little planes follow the car and rescue her. That could be traumatic for some kids. The illustrations were nice but a little busy.
My 2-yr-old had me read it to him about 6 times today. He's really into Jay Jay the Jet Plane and I think Budgie and friends reminded him of them. Mostly he liked the pictures and after a while I stopped reading and just turned the pages and talked about things on the page.
One thing that kinda bugged was that Budgie doesn't like to take a bath and that's supposed to be funny. I don't appreciate books or movies which make bad behavior or childhood struggles funny. I have a hard enough time getting the 4-yr-old in the tub and now he's got Budgie on his side to show how awful baths are. ARGH!!! How about a helicopter that loves to take baths, picks up his toys and enjoys broccoli at every meal. I'd like that book!!!!
I think this is a book you could pass up without feeling guilty.
In 1945, Eleanor Graham wrote a children's book called "Little Henry to the Rescue" about a little helicopter who was dismissed by larger airplanes, but who wound up saving the day. Maybe Sarah Ferguson read that book when she was little? Not the exact same plot, but pretty much the same theme. Not exactly plagarism, but hmmmm.... just saying.
rescue mission takes place in this, with budgie having to think on his feet (or skids, as it were). my little one enjoys the illustration but for older kids its good to see some serious topics feature in kids books whilst still giving a happy ending
