I wanted specific information in a simple, direct format re: training dogs and keeping my sanity. I found what I wanted in Ruth Maran's "Maran Illustrated Dog Training." My dachshund is trained (well, as much as she has allowed us to train her!) but I wanted to refresh my skills and also learn more about dealing with a senior dog. Found it all in this book. The writing is simple and direct with accompanying photos to illustrate the proper techniques. There is some repetition in the text but it's good repetition to reiterate previously learned skills with the new technique to be learned. This is a great book for first-time dog owners and a great refresher for those of us who have had dogs all of our lives.

I’ve read all sections of the book, minus the advanced tricks. Honestly, this is the best $1.99 I’ve ever spent (thank you, Goodwill). I love YouTube, but I don’t want to watch a 10-minute video every time I need to train my dog. I’ve sticky-noted all the pages I need, and in about 5 seconds I can flip to a page and get a refresher on how to teach tricks, potty train, socialize, and teach manners to my puppy. There are about 4 pictures on each page with captions underneath giving instructions. There are even FAQs at the top for if your dog isn’t responding to the cues. Listen, I’ve helped train my parents’ dogs, but using this book as a guide, my new puppy is going to be Beethoven.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words- and that's especially true when it comes to training dogs. Maran Illustrated Dog Training contains full color photographs for each trick/behavior to show you exactly what the training process looks like, which I found incredibly helpful. This book covers all the most important lessons, from name recognition, recall, and basic obedience, to more advanced training and tricks. While it gives some advice on certain behavioral problems, I do think the book could be improved by delving more extensively into this topic. Still, it was very informitive, as well as easy to understand, and I was happy to see that it used positive training methods rather than punishment or fear-based. One of the better training books books I have read. I would definately recommend it to anyone with a dog.

I use read loosely as this is a reference manual, and there's a limit to how much a dog will learn in a set period of time. I did, however, read the first 100 pages straight through, and have been going back the further we get into training. I think what was really funny to me was that I originally purchased this book for my first dog in what must have been 2007 and we didn't get much past the down command because she is of exceptionally mediocre brain power (she's very sweet and doesn't get into much trouble since she can't think of it). What surprised me on returning to it is how much of the training I did with her was specifically from this book as I probably read 10 or so at the time. The new puppy picked up 5 commands in the first week and seems to be going along just fine. I like the pictures and clear descriptions of how to use the commands and notes of what pitfalls to avoid.

I think this books is perfect both for new and experienced dog owners. I taught mu dog mostly according to tips found in this book and, if I must say so myself, she's a prefect companion. It might be thanks to her personality, thanks to this book and thanks to my family and mine experience with dogs but I think that anyone could manage to train their dog to perfection following the instructions found here. And if the instructions don't make sense the pictures will clear up any and all problems.
Best buy I've ever made.

My mother-in-law gave us this book when she was done with it IN CASE we would need it one day. Well, we're getting a puppy next week, and I've now devoured this incredibly helpful book.
