Joseph Fielding McConkie received a Doctorate of Education from Brigham Young University in 1973, following which he became the director of the LDS Institute of Religion at the University of Washington in Seattle. Four years later he joined the faculty at BYU where he is now a Professor of Ancient Scripture. He is the author or co-author of 25 books, the most recent being a 1200 page work titled Revelations of the Restoration. His scholarly interests center in scripture and doctrine. Other experiences include being an LDS Chaplain in Vietnam, a mission president in Scotland, and a Stake President at BYU.
I liked reading this book in conjunction with reading the Doctrine and Covenants. The authors provide insight into the background of the sections in the Doctrine and Covenants. One of the things I really liked was the inclusion of quotes and stories that highlight teachings in the Doctrine and Covenants. But the book is a little dated. New information about some of the sections has come to light in the Joseph Smith papers.
I have been working on this book for about two years, and finally finished it. There is a lot to process here! The diligent student of the doctrine and covenants will find a lot of great insight, background, and additional points to ponder here. An excellent resource!
An indispensable guide to anyone's study of the Doctrine and Covenants. It gives so much background info that you will feel as if you were there during the time.
This is one of the most doctrinally rich, powerful, and inspiring scriptural commentaries I have ever read. There were a lot of great doctrinal insights, a lot of great historical context for the revelations of the Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, Lectures on Faith, Wentworth Letter, King Follet Sermon, etc. It is a powerful testimony of Jesus Christ and the restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
This book was a very valuable addition to my education in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I highly recommend it.
NOTE: readers who enjoyed this book would almost certainly also want to read Making Sense of the Doctrine & Covenants: A Guided Tour Through Modern Revelations by Steven C. Harper.
Some excellent points in here. I believe the authors used some of the space to preach personal bias mostly against typical Mormon myths and folklore, but nevertheless they made some good points. Not a typical D&C commentary, they tried to comment on the things that are usually passed over.
This is a great book to read along with the Doctrine of Covenants. It was nice to get a background to the revelations of the restoration. This is a great read if you want to know more about history of the Church and also why Joseph Smith received the revelations.
