The St. Martin's Handbook

Rate this book
Andrea A. Lunsford's latest findings show that today's students write more than ever before -- and make rhetorically appropriate choices in texts they create outside the classroom. “We're in the midst of a literacy revolution the likes of which we haven't seen since Greek civilization,” she notes. The St. Martin's Handbook , Seventh Edition is the first handbook to help students build on the smart decisions they make as recreational writers in order to succeed in their academic and professional work. And The St. Martin's Handbook is the all-in-one teaching tool and reference that shows students how to write effectively for any purpose. .

A good general reference for one who wants to communicate

The one quality of English is its flexibility. Right behind flexibility is adaptability. You can say anything that you are thinking about in a myriad of ways. The local college said do not waste your time with grammar classes.

This is fine and works well until you listen to the evening news. "The police are looking for a suspect that ran" They are not particular as to which suspect, just any that ran.

One of my favorites is in the movie "The Thin Man" (1934), Nora says "It says that you were shot twice in the Tabloids.", Nick says "They never came near my tabloids."

Unix is built on the premise that less is more. Unless you have to do something precise, use fewer command options.

However once in a while, you will need to be precise and if you are addressing a precise audience, it is best to know the preferred syntax. This book can help guide you through the process of "Proper" English.

Keep it next to the dictionary and read it periodically on sleepless nights.

The elements of an argument: claims, reasons, assumptions, evidence, and qualifiers.

I had to get this book for my editing class in spring 2007. I have used it constantly ever since for other classes, paper writing, and general reference. Even though this 5th edition is still useful, I would love to get a more current edition. This one is from 2003.

Funny how you buy grammar books with the intent of using them but then never really do. It, however, remains a valuable resource...I think.
