ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ – ಕೆ ವಿ ಅಯ್ಯರ್

1942ನೆಯ ಇಸವಿ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚುರವಾದ Reader’s Digest ಎಂಬ ಅಮೆರಿಕದ ಮಾಸಪತ್ರಿಕೆ “The Face of Judas Inscariot’’ ಎಂದು, ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು ಪುಟದಷ್ಟು ಒಂದು ಕತೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿನ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಎರಡೇ: ಯಾರೋ ಒಬ್ಬ ಕಲಾವಂತ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿ, ಅವನಿಗೆ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ (Model)ಯಾಗಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬೀದಿಯ ಹುಡುಗ. ಕತೆಯೂ ಬಹುಚಿಕ್ಕದು.
ಅದರ ಎಳೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಏನನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಬಹುದು ? ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಾದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಸ್ಕೃತ ಪ್ರಬಂಧವನ್ನೋ,ಇನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರಬುದ್ಧರು ಒಂದು ನೀಳ್ಗತೆಯನ್ನು ಬರೆದಾರು. ಆದರೆ ಕೆ.ವಿ ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಅವರು, ಆ ಎಳೆಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಮನ ಮುಟ್ಟುವ, ಮನ ಕಲಕುವ, ಹೃದಯವ ಹಿಂಡುವ, ಅಂತಃಕರಣವ ತಟ್ಟುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಒಂದು ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಲೋಕವನ್ನೇ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆ ಲೋಕದ ಹೆಸರೇ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ !
ಇದನ್ನೊಂದು ದುರಂತ ಕಥೆಯೆನ್ನಲೋ,ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈಗನ್ನಡಿ ಎಂದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವಿಸಲೋ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಥಾ ಕಟು ಹೃದಯದವರೂ – ಮೋಸಗಾರರೂ ಇರುವರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿ ಹೇಳಿ ಅವರ ಭಯಾನಕ ಹೃದಯದ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೃತಿಯೆನ್ನಲೋ, ನಾನರಿಯೆ. ಆದರೆ ಓದಿನ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೃದಯ ನಿಸ್ಸಂದೇಹವಾಗಿ ಭಾರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. It’s an emotional rollercoaster ride.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಅವರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ. ಸಂದರ್ಭಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಹೆಣೆದಿರುವ ಸಾಲುಗಳ ಕುಸುರಿ.ಸಂತಸದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವನ್ನು ಬಣ್ಣಿಸಿ ಓದುಗನನ್ನೂ ಆ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಜೊತೆಗೇ ನಕ್ಕು ನಲಿದಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ, ಅತ್ಯಂತ ನೋವಿನ – ದುಃಖದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಮನೋಜ್ಞವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿ, ಓದುಗನೂ ಕೊರಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಮಾನ್ಯ ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಅವರು.ಹಾಗಿದೆ ಅವರ ಬರಹದ ಪ್ರಭಾವ !
ಫ್ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ನಗರದ ಚರ್ಚ್ ಒಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುವ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಚಿತ್ರಕಾರ ಮೈಕಲ್ ಅಂಜಲೋ, ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಲು ಓರ್ವ ಸೂಕ್ತನಾದ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿಯ ಆವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇದೆಯೆಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಊರೂರು ಅಲೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದ ಫಲಶೃತಿಯೇ ಪೀಸಾ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಎಂಬ ಬೀದಿ ಬಾಲಕ. ಈ ಬಾಲಕನನ್ನು ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ ಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಿದ ಮೈಕೆಲನಿಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಲವಾರು ವರುಷದ ನಂತರ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುವಾಗಲೂ ಕೂಡ ಜುದಾಸ್ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿಯ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಜುದಾಸ್ ಓರ್ವ ಮೋಸಗಾರ. ನಂಬಿಕೆ ದ್ರೋಹಿ. ಇಂತಹ ಗುಣಗಳುಳ್ಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೈಕಲ್ ಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು ಗ್ಯಾರಿಬಾಲ್ಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಕಳ್ಳ.ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹಣದ ಆಸೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಫ್ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ಗೆ ಕರೆತರುವ ಮೈಕಲ್ ನ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಘನ ಘೋರ ಸತ್ಯದ ಅನಾವರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಧಿಯ ಪ್ರವಾಹಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ, ನಲುಗಿ, ದಿಕ್ಕಾಪಾಲಾದ ಒಂದು ಜೀವದ ದುರಂತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ದೌರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಒದಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ನಿಷ್ಕಲ್ಮಶ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಸ್ಪುರದ್ರೂಪಿ ಜೀವಿ – ಲಂಪಟನೂ, ಮೋಸಗಾರನೂ,ಕುರುಪಿಯೂ ಹೇಗಾದಾನು? Every scar has a story ಎಂಬ ಸಾಲಿದೆ.ಒಂದು ತರಚು ಗಾಯವೂ ಅದರದ್ದೇ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ತನ್ನ ರೂಪವನ್ನೇ ಮರೆಸಿದ,ಜನ ನೋಡುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಅಸಹ್ಯ ಪಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಆ ಗಾಯ ಅದೆಂತಾ ದುರಂತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು ? ಆ ಗಾಯ ಒಂದು ಜೀವನನ್ನು ಮರಳಿ ಬಾರದಂತೆ ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ದೂರ ತಳ್ಳಬಹುದು? ಆ ಕಥೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ, ಓದುಗನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ದುಃಖದಿಂದ ಕುಗ್ಗುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಾತೃ ಪ್ರೇಮವನ್ನು ಸೂಸುವ ಎರಡು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿವೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ. ಒಂದು ಲಿಸ್ಸಾ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಲೀನ. ಒಂದು ಜೀವ ಮೈಕೆಲ್ ಗೆ ಆಸರೆಯಾದರೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಜೀವ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಗಾಗಿ ಮರುಗಿತು.ಅಬ್ಬಾ ! ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಜೀವ ಧಾರೆಯೆರೆಯಬಲ್ಲದೆ ? ಒಂದು ಸಂಸಾರ ಸುಖವಾಗಿ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಆದರ್ಶವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನದೇ ಬಹು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರ.ಅದನ್ನು ಲಿಸ್ಸ – ನನ್ನೆಟ್ಟಿ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.ಅವರಂತೆ ಒಬ್ಬರನೊಬ್ಬರು ಅರಿತು ಬಾಳಬಹುದೇ? ಕುರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ತಲೆಮರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಗಾಗಿ ಕಾತರದಿಂದ ಕಾಯುವ ಯುವೋನ ಅದೆಂತಾ ಪರಿಶುದ್ಧ ಮನದ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ! ವಾಹ್.
ಇಂತಾ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಸಂಗ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಆಗದೇ ಇರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಚಿಂತಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂರು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು – ಜಿಯೋವನಿ,ಆತನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಲೀನಾ ಳ ಗಂಡ ಟಾಯಿಟ್. ಒಂದು ಕೊಳೆತ ಹಣ್ಣು, ತನ್ನೊಡನೆ ಇದ್ದ ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೆಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕುದಾದ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಜಿಯೋವನಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಆತನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯದ್ದು. ತಕ್ಕ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವಾನಗಿದ್ದ ಆತ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿ,ಊರಿಗೆ ಮಾರಿಯಾಗುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ನೀತಿ ಪಾಠವಿದೆ.ತನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ,ಸ್ವಂತ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಿಂದ ಅದನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಬೇಕೆಂಬುದು ನಾವು ಕಲಿಯಬಹುದಾದ ಪಾಠ. ಸಂಶಯ ತುಂಬಿದ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವ ಕೀಳು ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಯಲೂ ತಯಾರಿರುತ್ತದೆ.ಕುಡಿತದ ದಾಸನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಟಾಯಿಟ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶಯದ ಭೂತ ಬೆಳೆದು ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಒಂದು ಜೀವನದ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಂದಿಯಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿಗಳ ನೆವದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಕಲ್ ಅನ್ವೇಷಿಸುವುದು ಒಳಿತು – ಕೆಡುಕುಗಳ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು,ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗುವ ಜೀವನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು.ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಅವರ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕಲ್ಪನಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ರಚನಾ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಮನಮುಟ್ಟುವಂತಿದೆ. ತಲೆದೂಗುವಂತಿದೆ. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಿಯರ ಮನೆ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ ಯೂ ಒಂದು.

ಫ್ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ನಗರದ ಚರ್ಚ್ ಒಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುವ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಚಿತ್ರಕಾರ ಮೈಕಲ್ ಅಂಜಲೋ, ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಲು ಓರ್ವ ಸೂಕ್ತನಾದ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿಯ ಆವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇದೆಯೆಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಊರೂರು ಅಲೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದ ಫಲಶೃತಿಯೇ ಪೀಸಾ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಎಂಬ ಬೀದಿ ಬಾಲಕ. ಈ ಬಾಲಕನನ್ನು ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿ ಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಿದ ಮೈಕೆಲನಿಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಲವಾರು ವರುಷದ ನಂತರ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುವಾಗಲೂ ಕೂಡ ಜುದಾಸ್ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ರೂಪದರ್ಶಿಯ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಜುದಾಸ್ ಓರ್ವ ಮೋಸಗಾರ. ನಂಬಿಕೆ ದ್ರೋಹಿ. ಇಂತಹ ಗುಣಗಳುಳ್ಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೈಕಲ್ ಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು ಗ್ಯಾರಿಬಾಲ್ಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಕಳ್ಳ.ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹಣದ ಆಸೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಫ್ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ಗೆ ಕರೆತರುವ ಮೈಕಲ್ ನ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಘನ ಘೋರ ಸತ್ಯದ ಅನಾವರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಧಿಯ ಪ್ರವಾಹಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ, ನಲುಗಿ, ದಿಕ್ಕಾಪಾಲಾದ ಒಂದು ಜೀವದ ದುರಂತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ದೌರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಒದಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

Every scar has a story ಎಂಬ ಸಾಲಿದೆ.ಒಂದು ತರಚು ಗಾಯವೂ ಅದರದ್ದೇ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ತನ್ನ ರೂಪವನ್ನೇ ಮರೆಸಿದ,ಜನ ನೋಡುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಅಸಹ್ಯ ಪಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಆ ಗಾಯ ಅದೆಂತಾ ದುರಂತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು ? ಆ ಗಾಯ ಒಂದು ಜೀವನನ್ನು ಮರಳಿ ಬಾರದಂತೆ ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ದೂರ ತಳ್ಳಬಹುದು? ಆ ಕಥೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ, ಓದುಗನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ದುಃಖದಿಂದ ಕುಗ್ಗುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಾತೃ ಪ್ರೇಮವನ್ನು ಸೂಸುವ ಎರಡು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿವೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ. ಒಂದು ಲಿಸ್ಸಾ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಲೀನ. ಒಂದು ಜೀವ ಮೈಕೆಲ್ ಗೆ ಆಸರೆಯಾದರೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಜೀವ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಗಾಗಿ ಮರುಗಿತು.ಅಬ್ಬಾ ! ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಜೀವ ಧಾರೆಯೆರೆಯಬಲ್ಲದೆ ? ಒಂದು ಸಂಸಾರ ಸುಖವಾಗಿ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಆದರ್ಶವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನದೇ ಬಹು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರ.ಅದನ್ನು ಲಿಸ್ಸ – ನನ್ನೆಟ್ಟಿ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.ಅವರಂತೆ ಒಬ್ಬರನೊಬ್ಬರು ಅರಿತು ಬಾಳಬಹುದೇ? ಕುರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ತಲೆಮರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಅರ್ನೆಸ್ಟ್ ಗಾಗಿ ಕಾತರದಿಂದ ಕಾಯುವ ಯುವೋನ ಅದೆಂತಾ ಪರಿಶುದ್ಧ ಮನದ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ! ವಾಹ್.
ಇಂತಾ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಸಂಗ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಆಗದೇ ಇರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಚಿಂತಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂರು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು – ಜಿಯೋವನಿ,ಆತನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಲೀನಾ ಳ ಗಂಡ ಟಾಯಿಟ್. ಒಂದು ಕೊಳೆತ ಹಣ್ಣು, ತನ್ನೊಡನೆ ಇದ್ದ ಅಷ್ಟೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೆಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕುದಾದ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಜಿಯೋವನಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಆತನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯದ್ದು. ತಕ್ಕ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವಾನಗಿದ್ದ ಆತ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿ,ಊರಿಗೆ ಮಾರಿಯಾಗುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ನೀತಿ ಪಾಠವಿದೆ.ತನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ,ಸ್ವಂತ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಿಂದ ಅದನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಬೇಕೆಂಬುದು ನಾವು ಕಲಿಯಬಹುದಾದ ಪಾಠ. ಸಂಶಯ ತುಂಬಿದ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವ ಕೀಳು ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಯಲೂ ತಯಾರಿರುತ್ತದೆ.ಕುಡಿತದ ದಾಸನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಟಾಯಿಟ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶಯದ ಭೂತ ಬೆಳೆದು ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಒಂದು ಜೀವನದ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಂದಿಯಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ, ಇಟಲಿಯ ಕಥೆಯಾದರು ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೃಜನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ಅಡಕವಾಗಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮರಳಿ ಮಣ್ಣಿಗೆಯನಂತರ ನಾ ಓದಿದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅತೀ ದುರಂತದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು.

When one finishes a book, very rarely does one encounter a situation, where we at a loss of words to write a review for the book. This is one such extraordinary instance. This book could be described as the journey of Michael Angelo in his search for the right model to carve out the various phases of Christ’s life. This book could also be described as the interesting journey of Ernesto. Could this be the constant fight of good (god) vs evil (satan)? Or could this be the story of wealth and its effect in life? Or could this be an exemplary description of the shadripus? Well, this book is all these and much more.
One of the underlying themes that is effectively brought out is the interconnectedness of life. How each of the experiences and people who come into our life are interconnected with each other & the divine cosmic play behind it. I couldn’t help but marvel at the interesting twists at various junctures which reinforced this feeling multiple times. There is a lot of similarity between the subtle theme & “Tree of Souls” in Avatar movie.
This book captures the trials and travails of Michael Angelo, the master painter & sculptor spanning across Florence, Paris & Vatican. The journey & search for models whether it’s the young Christ or the traitor Judas, the book captures his journey across a lifetime & the philosophical experiences that arise out of the same.
The author’s brilliance is evident in multiple instances. Example: The conversation of the sculptor with his friend is more philosophical and reflects on the interconnectedness of a man and his society. The inter-dependence at an emotional level, which can’t be quantified, is brought out succinctly with some wonderful examples. The vacillating mind between contentment & worry is brought out beautifully with the conundrum within the elderly woman’s mind. The message is hard to miss.
The instance where Michael truly realises who Garibaldi is, is one of the most hard hitting moments of the book. The entire perspective is turned inside out & the revelation just knocks the wind out of the reader. Empathy of one living being for another is brought out so eloquently in the bear episode. The unravelling story of the 3rd section and way a man’s faith, belief & values are tested evokes strong emotions & contemplation within oneself. The model is more metaphysical than a physical entity. The story can be interpreted at multiple levels and layers, which I am sure will evolve with each new reading.
This book is a simple MASTERPIECE, an amazing literary effort on part of the author, who originally was a body-builder.
To quote Niels Bohr, “In the great drama of existence we are audience and actors at the same time.”

this is a awesome novel. its a must every kannadiga must read. i must have read it more than 15 times. this has been rated at one of the best 10 novels written in kannada.

1. The writing holds up fairly well even though the book came out more than 7 decades ago.
2. Michelangelo's struggles to paint the Sistine Chapel get only a few pages. David isn't even mentioned at all. Saying this as a fair warning to people who might pick up the book hoping to read about his well-known paintings & sculptures.
3. We know the Greek Tragedies are famous, but this book is an Italian Renaissance Tragedy. ಕಥೆ full ಗೋಳು ಗುರು. It reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut's quote: "Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of."

Everything, everywhere everytime we witness something or the other.
With every witness something on the outside, we also witness something within ourselves.
The ability to witness and act upon and again witness the result of our act....this according to me is the key motif of Roopadarshi...
Hats off to KV Iyer, we need more and more books like these in our shelves, a literary masterpiece that makes you think for a long time even after you close the book.
Highly recommend this once in a lifetime work.

This is one of the best books I have read till date!The way it has been put down is just beyond words. The story of an artist in search of a suitable person to depict the life story of Jesus looks simple.But the way the twists are introduced in the story is just awesome.I feel like reading it again and again.Such is the effect of the story on the reader.

The message of the book though very interesting, the story seemed to have expanded more than necessary to convey the point. The original short story on which this book is based on, more than adequately covered the theme of this book.
The prose and narration of the book is lucid and easy to follow, and the trials and tribulations of the protaganist touch a certain chord in all of us.

Must read... Author has conveyed many things in one story... You feel every emotion in this like Dedication in Michel, Beauty in Young Jesus, Love in Lissa, Cruelness in Judaas, Caring in granny and many... You feel bore initially but when story start developing by itself you feel pain in it.. definitely this is one of top 100 novels in kannada..
