Her novella The Light in the Piazza (1960) was adapted for the screen in 1962 and transformed into a Broadway musical of the same name in 2005. She is a five-time recipient of the O. Henry Award for short fiction.
I love her books. The stories have deep meanings and allusions that I don't always catch on to (lol) but I really like her writing style. I hope to be able to read all her books eventually.
Elizabeth Spencer has published many books but I haven't read her previously. I don't think has written anything recently. "Ship Island and Other Stories" was written in 1968. It is a great collection of stories, simple, yet complicated, rich with old Southern traditions.
I didn't give this collection 5 stars because it was too dated for me, at times.
I believe I was living in Greenville when I read this book by the writer who was from my hometown of Carrollton, Miss. Absolutely, I loved the writing and the stories...still do. Slow down, folks, read them and be as charmed by them as was I.
