Italy's best-known fantasy artist, and the illustrator of the bestselling comic book Nathan Never , gets a volume devoted to 140 of his remarkable paintings. Most famous for his fascinating and graceful warrior women, Max Bertolini also crafts distinctive alien landscapes, all done with careful consideration for contrast and chiaroscuro. Among the works showcased here is Dragon Ride , with a statuesque female balanced on the back of that mythical beast as it soars across a magical land of misty sky and water, with sharp craggy rocks and a looming castle. For The Final Fight, Bertolini used miniatures and took photographs to help him create the atmospheric shadows. Each image brings a new world to life.
Another addition to my growing Paper Tiger collection. Really there is little I can add that the bio of the artist does not cover already. He has created works from high fantasy to science fiction and everything in-between. He is one of Italy's foremost fantasy artists although you quickly realise that his work is not limited to just Italy.
The book as expected from Paper Tiger is a beautiful production with on single page image spreads with a balanced text on both technique and subject matter. My only dislike about the book was that some of the images felt as though they were not as sharp as the possibly could be- now this could be intentional however looking at similar books from this series I would question that.
However these are minor issues - which in general are overcome by the quality of the publication and its material. This is just another example of why the books published by Paper Tiger are sorely missed and much over looked.
