About the author

Max Gallo was a French writer, historian and politician.

The son of Italian immigrants, Max Gallo's early career was in journalism. At the time he was a Communist (until 1956). In 1974, he joined the Socialist Party. On April 26, 2007, the French Academy recorded his candidacy for its Seat 24, formerly held by the late Jean-François Revel. He was elected to the French Academy on 31 May 2007.

Encore un livre de trop de ce pourtant grand historien qu'est Max Gallo....un livre sans faits enrichissants ni analyses nouvelles, assorti du ridicule couplet politiquement correct et historiquement nul du narrateur sur les lombards et les juifs...

The 14th century writing style of the narrator; with many references and questions to God is quite tedious, and makes the narrative story opaque sometimes. Despite this aspect, the narration of the most interesting feat of arms and conquests of the three founder kings of the realm of France, put in his historical context is worth being read.

Un excellent récit de trois grand rois de la France: Philippe Auguste, Saint-Louis, et Philippe le Bel. Très informatif. Max Gallo décrit le meilleur et le pire de chaque roi, ne cachant pas leurs fautes et leurs échecs.

On se perd facilement dans cette chronique des grands rois capétiens que furent Philippe Auguste, Saint Louis et Philippe le Bel. Le "personnage" du chevalier qui raconte les événements est "vide", même si parfois il fait part de ses émotions. Quant à la fin, on termine un chapitre, on tourne la page, et il n'y a plus rien. Pas de conclusion, pas de suite annoncée, rien ...
