Here is the autobiography of one of America's greatest Bible expositors, Warren Wiersbe, whose illustrious career as youth worker, pastor, Bible teacher, lecturer, and writer has won him the esteem of thousands of admirers.
Warren W. Wiersbe, former pastor of the Moody Church and general director of Back to the Bible, has traveled widely as a Bible teacher and conference speaker. Because of his encouragement to those in ministry, Dr. Wiersbe is often referred to as 'the pastor's pastor.' He has ministered in churches and conferences throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Central and South America, and Europe. Dr. Wiersbe has written over 150 books, including the popular BE series of commentaries on every book of the Bible, which has sold more than four million copies. At the 2002 Christian Booksellers Convention, he was awarded the Gold Medallion Lifetime Achievement Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Dr. Wiersbe and his wife, Betty, live in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The path to taking up a book can be interesting, and so it is in this case. While doing research on my church's history (writing a book for our 175th next year), I found this volume in a search because one of our pastors baptized Dr. Wiersebe when he pastored another church. Wanting to see what it would tell me on Rev. Dewey McFadden (with us in the 1920s), I decided to purchase a copy. And I'm glad I did. While it did not give me a lot of info on Rev. McFadden (no surprise), I was ushered into the life and ministry of an excellent Bible expositor. One who expressed humor, humility, faithfulness, and a great love for God, God's Word, and God's people. On several occasions, Dr. Wiersbe shared his love of reading biographies (he was wide read, and his love of books is apparent throughout) and stated: "I am no longer infatuated with the latest church-growth scheme or intimidated when I fail to attend the latest seminar. Instead of reading the books of the hour, I am concentrating on the books of the ages and learning a lot more." I'm pleased that I came across this sharing of a faithful life and had an opportunity to learn from it.
I really appreciate Warren Wiersbe's commentaries so when this book was available at a church book sale recently I grabbed it. I enjoyed getting his personal take on his life story. There were a few times I got bogged down by the names of people and places unfamiliar to me, especially during his Youth for Christ years, but I pressed on and I'm glad I did. There are definitely some nuggets of truth to be gleaned; once a pastor, always a pastor. He definitely had a shepherd's heart for his people and audience.
Funny, insightful, candid! If you want to get to know the author behind more than 150 solid Christian books, then this is your best read from the author who wrote them. I very much enjoyed the honest and sometimes humorous approach to Warren Wiersbe’s autobiography. It’s a short book and a good read. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in knowing the man behind the many books and magazine articles written over his lifetime.
