Using the Atlanta Braves as a focal point, Scout’s Honor is an in-depth look at what instinct and gut reaction means to baseball and how the numbers-don’t-lie style of the new breed is not only misleading, but mistaken.
A must read for Braves fans and for the baseball junkie. Probably too much detail for the casual fan. It is the opposite of "Moneyball" with a focus on the human contribution to finding players. A follow up book would be interesting as the Braves fell apart, changed people and then seem to have recovered following the principles that are outlined as the Braves way. A lot of the material has been written in articles and TV specials.
Wonderful book by Bill Shanks... provides an amazing history of those involved in building the Braves' winning streak in Atlanta. Great to learn my favorite childhood team was run and built with such integrity. Fun to learn about Paul Snyder, Bill Lucas, Roy Clark, Bobby Cox, John Schurholtz - and the men from the Royals and Orioles John developed this system with.
This is the opposite of Moneyball. If you like the Braves and the stories of how scouts find and sign players you will appreciate this. Obviously Braves fans will love it. Nice to see the other side of Moneyball that is probably a more accepted way of business in baseball.
