Welcome to America's newest and most popular Rhysmith! Featuring one-on-one dance battles atop a hi-tech glass court grid, when the music hits, you and your opponent dance across a digital minefield for the glory of being the most stylish Rhysmither! High school student Elena is looking for a little something extra to beef up her college applications. When she is thrust into the fast-paced world of Rhysmith, she begins to get her groove on. But is Elena truly ready for the rivalry...and romance?
Well, there is such a thing as western manga. This is it. I actually like this manga. A little. It has potential. Too bad Tokyopop went and fucked it all up. (google it if you want to know what happened with them back in the 00's) Anyway, it's a manga about a new dance game and the competition between school teams. There is a bit of a mystery behind it, a member has gone missing, another member has issues with his father and a coach that is, well he is.... stuff that never gets a resolve because the manga gets cancelled due to Tokyopop's utter failure. It's a shame, I liked it well enough to start to get invested. But there is no point really in starting to read it since it's not very satisfying when there is no proper end and no conclusion to the mysteries. I wouldn't recommend it really, unless you like unfinished stories.
It's OK, the story is nice and the graphics are good. It's a little open end. Especially in terms of Elena and the love... Rhysmyth is like these dancing games for PlayStation or Wii where you have a dance mat, but not only with 4 squares, it had 56 squares 🙈 It sounds and looks very exhausting.
The art -- so bad! Weird proportions, and little sense of layout on the page. Also, a strange attempt to cash in on the popularity of DDR and Guitar Hero that doesn't work well. And...bad art!
I really like the characters in this one especially Elena and Wahzee. I find it interesting how his personality sort of changes between his regular life and his competitive Rhysmyth life
This was a fun read. The game of "Rhysmyth" seems a lot like "Dance Dance Revolution" actually. It'd be fun to see people play DDR as a competitive sport.
So as a person who did not really play dance dance revolution a graphic that is basically that game on steroids is a little weird for me. The back had it rated as a romance, and while I can see that happening down the road, it should have been in sports manga. Rating high school as the characters are that age and for a locker scene that doesn't show much, but brings up high schoolers wearing Victoria's secret underwear as an ideal.
Basic Premise: Elena is your average high school student looking to get a little extra credit on her college application by doing some after school sport or activity. She really needs that credit too, as her grades are little less than average in places. After a rather dramatic not-fall down the stairs she is recruited to join the Rhysmyth team (DDR made even more difficult). Considering that she's perpetually clumsy how is she going to make it on the team, let alone compete against the school's queen bee for a spot in the next competition?
