The peek-a-boo cutouts really got Alissa's attention.

Now... I don't know that "I really liked it"... it's for kids after all. But my boys and any other children I have read this too love it! I like children's stories that are not too wordy for the age of the child I am reading to (or I adapt the words and shorten it), stories that captivate them or transport them to another time and place or teach them something just through the the story itself. This is a fun story, it has enough sentences to keep a pre-schooler following along but can easily be adapted to a younger child. It rhymes and the story is easy to follow and keeps interest. It has an animal in it (and I'm not talking about the dinosaurs) so that's a bonus cause both my boys have loved books with animals and yet both have loved this one in slightly different ways.
When Caysen was a toddler/pre-schooler he liked to find the cat named "Whisker's" and point to her on each page. He liked to point out Barney, and Baby Bop as well. He liked to count each of the kittens at the end. Caysen could very easily and from a young age sit still and listen to the story, the whole story.
Cade (who has just turned 2 and has inherited this book from Caysen) likes to poke his fingers through the holes (windows) in the pages. The holes show a little of what's on the next page or the previous page, but it's all part of the illustration. Cade will listen to the story but he will NEED to poke his fingers through the hole and if he see's your fingers through the hole he points it out everytime. He's quite intrigued with it. I don't think I've read a complete page yet. Cade wants us to name the items on the pages, so I usually only get a short sentence in before we start naming the items and then move to the next page at his insistence. He will want to look at certain items longer then others that are particularly interesting to him such as the train, ladybug, Baby Bop's yellow blanket. Oh, when he recognizes that Baby Bop is carrying her blanket he will get up and go gather up all his white burp cloths (comfort thing). You see he thinks Baby Bop is carrying around a yellow burp cloth, so he needs his too. Recently he wants to skip all the way to the end where Baby bop is about to pour milk into a bowl. That is cade's favorite part and highlight of the story!

For fans of Barney this one is perfect. You have the cutouts to peer through, lots of things to look at on the pages (which gives the person reading time to slow down and ask the child to point at things) and has a fun bouncy rhyme to it. The ending is a pleasant surprise.
I'm not a huge Barney fan, but we went through these years with the kids, and honestly this was a reminder of the things I liked best about the show.
