The natural world comes alive for young readers (Ages 6-7) with Rookie Read-About "RM" Science! Age appropriate for 6-7 years old, but only if read to them. They certainly are not going to read it themselves... not with big words like Bladderwort, different, pitcher, etc.
This book is good for grades k-2. It may have some hard words that the kids don't know which its the name of the plants but other than those words they should be able to read them. The book genre is informational.
This is the kind of early elementary nonfiction that I love to share as a read-aloud. The topic is cool: carnivorous plants! The photos are large - no crude line drawings as stand-ins. The text is simple and straightforward but doesn't feel dumbed down. Gross in a good way!
This is yet another book that can be used in science lessons discussing the different types of plants, plant cycles, and needs of plants. For this particular story teachers could bring in a mock plant or show a video of how these amazing carnivores live.
Read this during practicum in my guided reading group. Students HATED it. The pictures creeped them out and the thought of the plants eating animals instead of vice versa really made them uncomfortable. Very informational though. Students were able to recall a lot of information even though they did not enjoy the the book.
