A friend of mine gave me this book as a retirement gift several years ago. I had to laugh at many of the ways Levine tells you to bust out of your normal humdrum days and rejoice . . . by being spontaneous (call an old friend, part your hair on the other side), by giving in to new colors (buy yourself a bouquet of flowers once a month, don't wear black to the next party you go to), talk to strangers (you never know how much you may have missed a great opportunity to know someone special), offer yourself five minutes of peace (regenerative, listen to the sounds around you, stay put for five minutes in the bed every morning and say good morning to yourself and the new day). These and so many other thoughtful and crazy ways to change the rules are offered in this book.
I was reading one of these prompts daily for a while and while they can be cute, they’re really cheesy and I honestly don’t agree with a lot of them 😂 I felt like it was trying really hard to inspire me but I constantly felt the need to roll my eyes. Not a bad concept, though!
This book perfectly reflects my philosophy on life--don't take it too seriously; you don't have to grow up if you don't want to; cut yourself some slack; dessert is okay to eat any time. I certainly don't follow all of the author's 52 rules perfectly, but I sure can aspire to.
