It's hard to believe this book has an editor or a designer. The writing is not good and the stock photos are reused. But the reason I give two stars is because the book seems like less about Feng Shui and more about the author's personal opinions and anecdotes having to do with her interpretation of it. If you're looking for a book to introduce you to practice of Feng Shui then I'd look elsewhere.
Ignorance is bliss. I knew nothing about Feng Shui other than 'hey, rearrange a few pieces of furniture and your chi will improve...' Apparently there's more to it than that, 167 more things actually. It's a great book as it reads in a particular order where you can read a tip, look around and rearrange some stuff in the house to strengthen the flow and go back to reading the book. It gets in your head and heightens your awareness of things in your environment which are good and bad. If you ever thought it would be a weekend project to get all feng shui'd, settle in, the one pitfall is it encourages you to buy a bunch of shit and you may need to make adjustments so you don't go broke while improving your yang, or your chi. Peace.
One of the hats I wear is as a Feng Shui practitioner, and I am constantly asked by clients and friends to recommend some good Feng Shui books. While I am not wild about all of Too's books, this is one of the most accessible to those not familiar with Feng Shui. There are a few of her recommendations in the book I raise an eyebrow at, and this is one of the great problems of writing about Feng Shui. But a lot of her advice is sound. It also has one of the best explanations of the Flying Stars that I can recommend to anyone who is trying to learn more about this more arcane practice within Feng Shui. While not a text book, it's a good basic for beginners.
Books like these are more of a reference. TBH I found myself reading and re-reading some areas and feel like I didn't quite catch it the first time round. A lil bit vague on the colours and directions. But the symbols, arrangements, and other non calculative theories were beautifully put. I'm tempted to follow some suggestions, including placing sprouts in SE, and purchasing an om mani ring as a necklace. Plenty useful tips.
