A good compilation of reminders for the practiced cat owner and great for someone who is a first time cat owner. I feel like a bit of the information is outdated based on recent guidelines from veternarians, but overall a nice book.
I was pretty disappointed with Complete Cat Care. I had expected a sort of holistic discussion of cats and their behavior, and how to positively interact with cats. My expectations were way off. I probably should have paid more attention to the title... Instead, the book has some brief discussion on the history of cats and the types of cats that exist. Then it went into some things you should pay attention to/do when dealing with cats. Finally, it has a section on how to handle specific issues that you might have with cats.
Overall, the book was sort of useful. There was some good (if brief) stuff on training cats, and I learned some good things on very general cat behaviors. But it was really brief about specifics. And the pictures are super disappointing! It's so useful to have pictures in a book like this, but there just weren't enough examples of things. For one, there's a whole section on different types of cats and different ways to describe types of cats. But there aren't pictures for every term used! So I had no idea what the book was talking about with a bunch of terms, so I found that section to be useless. Then, there was a part on how to recognize the mood your cat might be in based on it's body. There just weren't enough examples here, and I leave it thinking that it really depends on the cat, and I have to figure it out for myself.
Complete Cat Care is probably best used as a reference book. If you have a specific issue with your cat, browse through this book and see if it addresses your issue. Don't read the rest of it, though.
I loved this book! Well rounded with information about everything from "cathropology" (history and culture of cats) to obedience training, from behavioral fixes to the sad goodbye at the end of your cat's life.
My favorite part though was the pictures! Beautiful, vibrant color pictures on every page, complete with captions (on most). This book has a layout as informative as an illustrated text book, but is interesting and visually stimulating enough to be a coffee table book. Probably will buy my own copy.
This book is helping me have a better relationships with my cats already! This is a really helpful manual chock-full of history and instructions regarding how to care for a cat. A great reference.
