Really excellent.

I would probably not have found this book in the myriad of hiking books had we not been given a signed copy by the author...My husband and I, staying for our honeymoon in Cannon Beach, were at the appropriately named Hug Point beach(included as a hike in this book!) when we were approached by a couple and asked to witness their wedding, performed there and then by a friend of theirs. The only other attendee was their dog. The couple were Douglas Lorain and Becky Lovejoy. Signed books of their authorship were a lovely memento of this simple and fuss-free wedding.

IT'S GOT COLOR PICTURES!!! This may seem like a little thing, a given even but oddly enough most hiking/backpacking books (at least in Oregon) are ominously black and white and generally just kind of 70ish feeling (maybe it's like that bumper sticker: welcome to oregon, now go home! it's like shhhhhhhh, don't show people how pretty Oregon really is because then our trails might get too full - its a theory anyway).
BUT this one has color and color is good. for example maybe if someone I know (someone whos name shall go unnamed: someone whos name starts with an S and ends with an h)had had a color h photo before she went hiking that one time she could have seen, in COLOR, what poision ivy looks like and then she wouldn't have walked into it and then she wouldn't have needed that fungus cream that looked exactly like toothpaste and then she wouldn't have had to wake up in the middle of the night while camping later and accidently smear toothpaste on her leg instead of the fungus cream and then she wouldn't put her fungus cream anywhere near the toothpaste so that her friend (whos name stars with M and ends with e and who is super good looking and incredibly smart and endlessly fascinating) would eventually pick up the fungus cream while staying at the beach and accidentally use the fungus cream for toothpaste.
Then again, maybe she would see a color picture of something and STILL not recognize it as being dangerous. like take for example maybe she would go on another hike with her friend (the good looking, fascinating one) and maybe even after looking at pictures of stinging nettle she would STILL walk right into it and get huge welts on her hand that are gross and sickifying to her friend.
but still my point is COLOR IS GOOD.

Douglas Lorain does a great job with his guide books. My girlfriend and I use his books religiously and have been on handfuls of amazing hikes in the past two years. We would've found the hikes eventually but Lorain's books helped us find the best time to go. Very highly recommended.

Learned quite a lot about Oregon just by reading these hike descriptions. Many places I had not heard much about. Especially liked the descriptions of Umpqua Dunes, Smith Rock State Park, Steins Pillar, John Day Fossil Beds/Painted Hills, and Arch Rock.
