About the author

Photographer, author, traveler and academic. An early pioneer in digital photography, I have written over 30 books on photography as well as on video. This work was recognised by the award of the HIPA Content Producer Award in 2019. I also won the Thomas Cook award for best Illustrated Travel Book for my coverage of the Marco Polo Expedition.

I was senior lecturer in photographic practice at the University of Westminster for over 12 years (1991–2004) and created the MA Photographic Journalism course. For over 10 years I photographed in Central Asia, traveling in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. I led a Know How Fund project that helped equip a radio studio for radio students and which reformed the journalism curriculum for the Kyrgyz Russian Slavonic University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

I have written over thirty books on photography and video including Digital Photography Masterclass (now 3rd edition), Fundamentals of Photography,Tao of Photography, Digital Photographer’s Handbook (now 7th edition), Picture Editing (2nd edition), Eyewitness Companion: Photography, and Digital Video Handbook, How to Photograph Absolutely Everything.

I presented the BBC series ‘A Digital Picture of Britain’, first transmitted in 2005 on BBC4. A second series, entitled 'Britain in Pictures' was transmitted in 2007. I also presented an 8-part TV series for CNA (Channel News Asia) in Singapore which was broadcast in August 2009. This took a Bronze at the New York Film and TV Festival the following year.

I have served on juries of Hamdan International Photography Award, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, World Photography Award, Czech Press Photo.

I am a Sony NZ Digital Imaging Ambassador.

Una prima met� abbondante strutturata come un corso fotografico in senso stretto (ogni capitolo introduce un argomento, e termina con un "esercizio per casa") con tante foto da cui prendere ispirazione. Viene dedicato poi il giusto alla post produzione (una infarinatura degli strumenti principali, essenzialmente). Ed interessante l'ultima parte... di un centinaio di pagine circa. Vengono presentati una serie di approfondimenti sulla fotografia, per genere. Quello sui ritratti, quello sui paesaggi, quello sulla fotografia sportiva, quello sui ritratti animali e via dicendo... In ogni capitolo ci sono dei consigli generali, un'interessante intervista ad un giovane fotografo particolarmente portato per quel genere (con diverse sue foto, che vengono commentate da Ang e dall'autore), ed anche qui qualche "esercizio", con ulteriori consigli E vengono citati 4 fotografi celebri, particolarmente famosi per quel genere particolare di fotografia... utile per approfondire. Su quest'ultima parte, menzione particolare per l'italiano Eolo Perfido, autore della meravigliosa foto di copertina, e per la giapponese Tamao Funahashi, che ha presentato delle splendide foto naturalistiche (uno dei miei generi preferiti). Se si � davvero principianti forse � un testo un po' troppo "avanzato", ma per un appassionato � un buon testo di supporto...

Ho trovato questa guida di Tom Ang ideale per chi è agli inizi ma anche per chi vuole rinfersarsi qualche passaggio.
Ottima l'impostazione delle schede,precisa,ordinata e buona l'idea dei progetti,per quanto non originalissimi e apprezzabilissima la sezione dei professionisti,che però avrebbe meritato maggior spazio: vediamolo come un tentativo di mettere curiosità a chi vorrà approfondire il tema e fare uno step successivo.

Lesson Learned: I am afraid I did not learn too much from this book. Many of the lessons and advice I had already picked up either via the internet or other books I borrowed.

This is a well written, cogent book detailing photography techniques and methodologies in detail. It is an interesting and fairly easy read as the technical terms are kept to a minimum.

Only had time for a quick read but what I did see looks really good. Lots of tips and helpful hints for working with photos online. Will be looking at this one again.
