The original document was discovered in the archive of the Library of the Senate in Paris by authors Rita Monaldi and Francesco Sorti. Monaldi and Sorti have celebrated the adventures of Atto Melani in a series of bestselling historical novels including Imprimatur, Secretum and Veritas.

About the author

Rita Monaldi majored in classical philology and specialized in the history of religions. She is an Italian journalist who, in collaboration with her husband, Francesco Sorti, wrote a series of literary-historical books called Imprimatur, Secretum and Veritas. They both live with their two young children in Vienna.

All the book titles of the series will create the sentence Imprimatur secretum, veritas mysterium. Unicum... The authors translate this as follows: “Even when a secret is printed, the truth is always a mystery. It remains only...” The authors are keeping secret the titles of the final two volumes.

Ooit eerder heb ik een boekje van Monaldi & Sorti gelezen en toen was ik al te spreken over hun schrijfkunst en die van de vertaler.
Maar ook nu moet ik zeggen dat ik heb genoten van het boekje. Ik wilde het uitlezen. Niet alleen om de schrijfwijze maar ook de uiteenzetting van her conclaaf.
Of dit boek nu geschreven is door Atto Melani of door het schrijversduo zelf bedacht, het is een mooi, geschreven boek waar ik van genoot.
En ik kijk uit naar hun andere boeken waar ik nu naar opzoek ga.

Een klein boekje waarin een spion anno 1700 de ‘geheimen van het conclaaf’ onthult aan de Franse Zonnekoning. Hoe werd destijds de nieuwe Paus gekozen? Met zijn tips en korte beschouwingen is het te lezen als een ‘vorstenspiegel’ zoals De Heerser van Machiavelli een paar eeuwen daarvoor, maar dan thematisch over de indertijd voor koningen zeer belangrijke verkiezing van de Paus. Uiteraard is het gedateerd; veel procedures zullen nu anders gaan. Wie verwacht dat het boekje stap voor stap onthult hoe het er binnen de muren aan toegaat komt bedrogen uit. Maar als beschrijving van de wetten die gelden in de politieke verwikkelingen en intriges voldoet het (vermoedelijk) nog altijd; die zijn immers universeel. Twee lessen springen eruit. De eerste: de uitkomst is zo ongewis dat deze wordt toegeschreven aan de Heilige Geest zelf. En dan de regel die je anno 2025 nog steeds leest over gedoodverfde kandidaten: wie als Paus naar binnen gaat, komt er als Kardinaal weer uit!

I can see how this booklet might appeal to others, but it didn’t really resonate with me. While I enjoy Monaldi & Sorti’s writing and find Atto Melani a fascinating figure, this collection of letters fell short. It offers a few entertaining titbits and intriguing insights into the mysterious conclave, but that’s about as far as it goes. I am waiting for the next instalment in the fascinating Imprimatur secretum, veritas mysterium series.
