This map-by-map guide to the epic history of America was produced in collaboration with the experts at the Smithsonian Institution.
Smithsonian The Atlas is a superb depiction of the history of North America and the United States told through extensive photographs and maps, both old and new. In collaboration with experts from the Smithsonian Institution, every corner of the continent is explored in detail—from the early people who first settled the land thousands of years ago to the diversity of the present day. This edition also includes 32 pages of bonus material, including a timeline of American history and a guide to all 50 U.S. states, as well as a large foldout page featuring two detailed full-color maps.
It's hard to figure out where to rate this book. I gave it 3 stars, but really it's about 3.5. I really only have one beef with this book because hey, it's produced by Smithsonian and it really is a beautiful and comprehensive book, but ...

Yes, there is a little bit about North and South America when talking about our archaeology, but in reality, the emphasis of this book is on the United States, but if they called it United States: The Atlas, it would ruin the alliteration, so ...
There is a lot of great information here and it is presented beautifully using not only text, but maps, diagrams, photographs, paintings, and more! The reader is encouraged to "read" the graphical part of the book, because there is a lot to see and learn, here!
At the end of the book is a Chronology of our History, a numbered list of Presidents and their terms served, and then that number is on a corresponding map of the U.S. for where they were born, brief factual information about the States of America, a list of Resources, a General Index, an Index of Place Names, and a list of Credits and Acknowledgments.
I do have one other small beef. I do wish the print was just a wee bit bigger.
A great adult refresher/table book/textbook. A broad collective focus on the geographic continent and its inhabitants, so half the content is pre colonial. Greats maps
