This is a great book for expanding students math skills. The book could be taught in pieces.
The first part will teach students to count from 1 to 10. It has a story and pictures to go along with each number. This reinforces the quantity of each number. An activity could be for student to make their own number book and draw pictures to illustrate each number 1 through 10. At the end of counting to 10, it recaps all the pictures for the students to recount 1 to 10.
The next section has a list of 11 to 20 of things that make up the quantity of each number. The teacher can allow the students to count each thing to build fluency with number 11-20. The teacher could also use the Smart Board to have the students count the things and write the number that corresponds to the picture quantity. Then the students could add the numbers 11-20 to their number book, drawing a picture for the quantity of each.
The next page shows how addition plays a part in counting. It uses number sentences and colored balls to demonstrate how to count from 20 to 30. Students can practice using this addition method to count from 20 to 30, then from 30 to 40 and so on. Once students have enough experience with this, they can add these numbers to their number book with the corresponding pictures.
The last part is like a 100's chart. It has all the numbers from 1 to 100 all color coded. I think this would be a good way to teach students about numbers. This could be another Smart Board activity where the students come up and right the numbers in order using the colors until reaching 100. Lastly, students could add any numbers they needed to their numbers book to end at 100. The title of the book could be "I counted to 100, Look through and see!" Now the students have a number book that they can always reference and that could help them as they learn about addition and subtraction (and more).
I can Count to 100... Can You by Katherine Howard illustrated by Michael J. Smollin is about a mouse that counts to 100. The books illustrations I think speak louder than the text. As you count with the mouse the illustrations help demonstrate the number and are fun when counting to 100. The end of the book says now try counting to 100 yourself. I think the book is a great introduction or book to use when learning about how to count to 100. It's fun and engaging with colorful illustrations.
