About the author

I began writing children's books when I was at art college, which means that I’ve spent over thirty years as a children's author. Must be nearly time to grow up. About eighty titles published to date, I think. These include story books and pop-ups for younger readers, as well as my more recent novels for older children. I'm also an illustrator and paper-engineer, and you can see examples of this type of work around the site.

Sometimes I provide the paper engineering for pop-up books by other artists and children's authors - Jan Pienkowski, for example, Emma Chichester-Clark and Damien Hirst.

Finally I'm a semi-pro musician, playing mostly jazz. I provided the music and artwork for two BBC children's television series of Bump the elephant. Mind you, that was ages ago, and so it's high time somebody sampled it for a dance track and made me a fortune.

My first major work for older children was The Touchstone Trilogy, completed in January 2008, the three titles being The Various, Celandine and Winter Wood. The Various was an award winner in The Nestle Smarties Book Prize 2003. Both Celandine and Winter Wood have been nominated for the Carnegie Medal.

Quyển sách tranh từng được thầy mình gợi ý mua để học về sơ lược lịch sự của một nhân vật vĩ đại trong nền nghệ thuật thế giới: Leonardo da Vinci. Cái tên mà đối với mình mang quá nhiều bí ẩn đến mức khó tin là thật. Nhưng quyển sách này đã không làm mình thất vọng khi vẽ ra một cái nhìn cận cảnh hơn về con người ấy.

Hài hước là câu chuyện được kể từ góc nhìn của một nhân vật hư cấu nhưng các nhân vật phụ lại có thật. Từng chi tiết bé xíu được vẽ rất tỉ mỉ và chọn style rất hợp để diễn tả một câu chuyện từ thời Phục Hưng. Khổ thì to đủ để ngồi ngắm mấy chi tiết tranh vẽ mãi thôi.

Duy nhất một điều kinh hãi là mình không hiểu tại sao lại chọn vẽ những khuôn mặt y hệt nhau trong những bức tranh có người học việc ở xưởng của Leonardo da Vinci. Một sự cố ý gây ấn tượng thị giác, một sự phân thân có hàm ý hay chỉ đơn thuần là một chọn lựa ? Bức tranh creepy nhất với mình là khi Leonardo (với chòm râu nhọn hoắt như đầu bút chì, lại lần nữa khiến mình tự nghi vấn những điều trên) đuổi theo những đứa trẻ giữa đêm, những biểu tượng kinh hãi trong cùng một khuôn mặt được duplicate lên, hẳn là không nên được xem vào ban đêm ;___;

Bỏ qua việc không ưng ý về thiết kế nhân vật lắm thì còn lại đều khiến mình thấy đủ và hài lòng. Một câu chuyện đủ súc tích, thêm thắt phần phụ lục và chú thích về giai đoạn, tác giả và các tác phẩm, các cột mốc dữ kiện lịch sử đi kèm tranh minh họa chi tiết nhưng cũng tóm tắt nhất, hợp cho một người lớn xem và nhớ cũng như cho trẻ con đọc và tò mò hơn.

An excellent source to learn about Leonardo Da Vinci through an apprentice's diary. Excellent illustrations to help imagine what it might be like to work with Leonardo. A wonderful perspective forms in a fun, keeps you interested story. Thoroughly enjoyed, and learned, from this book!
