These are absolutely wonderful stories! They must be, as Jr. Great Books has been around for over 50 years. This is how reading anthologies in school used to be.
The stories are delightful, well developed, interesting, and full of complex sentence structure and rich vocabulary.
There are workbooks with just the right amount of higher level thinking questions, too.
This was an excellent vehicle with which I could deliver reading instruction to my below grade level reluctant readers. We used the shared inquiry method, which they loved! The stories are "discussion rich" and really had the students thinking. This is the 5th grade Level I book that I used for my 6th grade class.
I'm actually going to start using this book at class meetings later in the spring once we finish reading Jerry Pinkney's Aesop's Fables. I think that's how I see Socratic seminar fitting into our day... Pretty excited to see what the reaction is!
OMG I have never forgotten the title of these books I was required to read in school during the early 80s. Although I can picture the gold and white cover of the series, I can't find here, but am grateful for the tangible memories here!
This fun collection of stories contains The Red Balloon, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Devoted Friend, Allah Will Provide, Vasilissa The Beautiful, and The Story Of Doctor Dolittle. From these stories you can learn many beautiful messages including the meaning of friendship, being truthful, and so much more. I would read this book again because of all the wonderful messages that it contains and because it has some of my favorite stories.
