A necromancer wants to turn Tokyo into a necropolis. That necromancer should be dead. Cain and Hannah had killed her long ago. Or so they thought. But there's a fresh infestation of necrotons, reanimated corpses, haunting Tokyo's streets. Cain and Hannah return to Tokyo to finish what they started. But what they find is much worse than they could have ever imagined. These necrotons aren't the same as the ones they faced before. Necrotons have strength in numbers. They're puppets on strings. Only as skilled as the necromancer controlling them. Remove the head and the strings are cut. But these necrotons don't work like that. They regenerate. And they keep coming. To make matters worse, the local Mage Guild won't help. In fact, they're actively protecting the new necromancer. That necromancer is working on a spell to kill millions of citizens at once. To instantly reanimate the corpses. And if Cain can't stop them, Tokyo will soon be a city of the dead.
I'll admit the writing in this series wasn't Shakespeare, but it was nothing that made me notice it either. While it doesn't show it here on Goodreads, my copy says it is co-written by someone named Austin Rising. I sure hope the next one isn't as well.
DNF at 16%, immediately after reading multiple pages of crap like this (full disclosure, paragraph breaks did get lost in the paste):
'She nodded. Wheeled the scooter around and headed back the way we'd come. We reached the restaurant. There were no necrotons. No people on the street. The restaurant was empty and silent. There were streaks of blood. Torn articles of clothing. Broken tables. The people were gone. Hannah hissed. "They killed everyone and took them." "Yeah." I stared back down the street toward the canals. Imagined the fresh bodies being piled on the floor. A necromancer looking at them. Deciding which ones to reanimate first.'
Did your comma key break?? There is no f-ing way I am reading an entire book written in short, choppy sentences like this. Sure, some authors might be able to pull it off, but these guys aren't it. I'm going to read a plot summary and then move on to the next one. If it continues like this, I'm done. The main characters are already unlikable jerks, so no reason to keep torturing myself.
This book starts with a bang, something that seems to be the signature move of this author. Luckily for the reader, there is no let down in the story from this point on. Cain, Hannah, and Co. are doing their best to stop a necromancer who is trying to create an army of necrotons large enough to take over Tokyo. Throw in fast-paced action, tension, some humor and add some nuggets like Fate, Chronos, and Death, an eldritch invasion, a text translating crow, and a Chthulhu mini-me; and you get the bones of an urban fantasy story that gets fleshed out into a terrific read. I loved it and highly recommend it.
The newest Cain installment is just as good as all the rest. The characters feel like family at this point and I love jumping back into their world each and every time. This latest adventure feels fresh and exciting with some changes in the monster squad lineup, new location and a new and deadly villain. The ending teaser promises to shake things up in the near future in the best possible way. I’m sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one.
While there is not a lot of donkey kicks or scoffing there is some. Nice to have a villain that is not so OP that the gang needs to have bs levels of luck (mad skills too). A bad guy who is not personally powerful but uses cunning and misdirected is way more interesting as an opponent than someone with godlike power. Another like for the series is that while the main characters advance in skill and power it's not as though they double or triple in power every book. It's a nice slow progression. Fun book, good read. Tom out
If you miss the Monster Squad, then your in luck. Cain is haunted by his time as “Death.” He finds that something is amiss in Tokyo, so he and Hannah head there. what they find is a dead recipe for disaster. someone is animating the dead. They want to find out who and why.
Just about the time I think that the author is ready to wrap up the Chronicles of Cain he releases this crazy ride. You never know what kind of trouble Cain will find himself in, and this story proves that. Get ready for a ride where nothing goes according to plan!
It's back to work the Cain after to much time off. What seems like a simple problem find bigger with each attempt to resolve it until Cain is facing of against mind games and renegades. Another fun book in the series.
This book was a fair balance of carnage, relevant pop culture memes and nefarious plots. As always such a strange ride full of quirks and chaos . Always appreciate a good Cain book.
