This book got better and better as I read it. I always felt sympathy for Claudia but it took a little way for me to feel really invested in her as a character. She is insecure and suspicious of people’s motives, finding it difficult to trust. This is due to how people have treated her in the past. Claudia has a unique ability and it has caused problems and had her confined to a research facility for much of her young life. Although she knows how to survive on her own, she is a total innocent. We follow her as she has to cope with a new family, a new school, navigating the social interactions of friendships and the attention of the school quarterback. It was an intriguing premise and there were moments of deep sadness, tension and some humour. I only have two minor criticisms - one is a few editing issues with typos and dialogue punctuation. The other is that we are never told what the experiments are for and why they had to be done in the way they were (can’t say more on that or I would spoil things). But perhaps we will learn more in the next book.

Can't wait for Book2

I just finished this book and I have to say I didn't expect to love it. Now I'm waiting for book 2. I don't like waiting for books, I read series when the writer officially published the last book of it. Oh well, it made me go back to my childhood and I just wanted to hold Mom and Grandma. Thanks them for being always there for me, even though everything

I picked this up having read another of Caroline’s books and was drawn into the world from the first page. I adored Claudia, and seeing her blossom and bloom after she finally gets free was a delight. Caroline has a way of creating a world that leaves you hooked, and guessing to find out where and when the twists are gonna come. I adored this world, loved Solomon and can’t wait to dive into the next book to see what happens next. Very much recommended!

Have I told you how much I love this book? Too much!

The first book in the Adapted series, Heat, is an emotional rollercoaster ride that stole my heart somewhere in the middle of the story. Or was it Solomon who stole my heart? It might've been both! After getting past a little skipping (and perhaps vague) introduction I loved everything about the characters and the storyline.

Claudia is an orphaned 16 year old. Distrustful. Insecure. Lonely. In her experience, nobody could ever love and want her. Not only because her ability to control heat and make fire makes her different from everyone around her, but because years ago a foster parent told it right into her face. At times it truly brought tears into my eyes at how well I could connect with her experiences with rejection. It was absolutely beautiful seeing her come out of her shell - piece by piece - and finding people she could share her burdens with.

As parts of the book were emotional to me, others were highly amusing. The most enjoyable moments for me were the times Claudia spent among her new friends, especially Solomon. I loved their interactions: ease, understanding, care. Most of all the revelations; most of all the naivety and innocence of which Claudia reacted to the world! I must say, I loved everything about the friendships she made and I loved Solomon!

Solomon - the high school quarterback, desired by every girl in the school - is a total sweetheart. Calm, relaxed and loyal to a fault. Everything about him made me want for more. The ending? My heart just melted away into a puddle of slur and dripped to the floor. All. Because. Of. Solomon!

Adapted, book one: Heat is exactly the book you’ll need to read next if you want to get lost in a story full of hardships, friendship and love. Because, lost you shall get. If you won’t lose your heart in the process, you will gain an experience not easily forgotten!

Claudia is a sixteen year old girl who's been in and out of foster homes for a while. But after a scarring incident she becomes wary, feels deserted and becomes jumpy in general. She views the world as if it did her wrong!

She thinks she's unlovable and unwanted because of her past experiences, she couldn't control the heat once and so it put her from being almost adopted to being sent to a Research Center. People have been breaking the fragile little girl inside her and have forced her to grow up.

Solomon is the high school Quarterback and is drooled over by most girls from school, so when he shows interest in her she's wary of his intentions and so is Charles. Now he has to prove to both Charles and Claudia that he's who he says he is! I am a puddle of goo when it comes to Solomon he's the perfect book boyfriend!! And he's the real deal girls so get ready to let your heart go pitter patter for him!!

I loved this book because it brought out so many emotions within me and even though not all of us has abandonment issues I could totally feel and connect with Claudia's pain and fears. It was a total emotional rollercoaster for me making me giggle, tear up, and furious through the lines. The author has done a thorough work on her writing style and plotline for readers to connect with the characters wholly and feel what they feel and the way she slowly brings down the walls Claudia has built around herself is spectacular to say the least!!

I urge you to read this tale of love, misery, disaster, danger, friendship and family, the sense of belonging you feel after reading this book is simply priceless!!

Book 1 is Heat and Book 2has been recently released its called Ice and you'll see why so get ready for an experience that stays with you forever!! Grab your copy NOW!!!!!

YA Urban Fantasy-Romance and more.
I am skipping on the story, but I will say that this will be a series, and I can't wait to read the sequel.

The Review:
"The Heat" was a fantastic read! I absolutely loved it. Why? I'm glad you asked. Let me tell you.
The idea is awesome, the storytelling phenomenal. The characters were unfolding, and I could follow their reactions because it made sense. The author connected the past to the present allowing a reader could see and feel the pain and brokenness of each character. Things aren't black and white because they are not. We all carry a bit of darkness in us, and that's the real challenge. The choices we make builds our character, which defines us as a person. Everyone makes mistakes. Friendship, loyalty, love and forgiveness are powerful when experienced from both sides.
Claudia's maturity on most things is way past her age. Keeping a secret about her past and powers makes her guarded and not easily trusting. She is an observer and listener. However, when she shares her opinion, she is straight-forward. In her words, Claudia welcomes honesty to courtesy.
I loved Claudia's innocents and her train of thoughts on boy topics that left her wondering. That innocence bordered naivete, which left her confused and got her into some hot waters.
"The Heat" is a total package: a fantasy, a romance, and a drama with bits of mystery, suspense and action.
All YA fantasy lovers, this is a call to action - do not miss out.
Also, don't forget to write a review; it makes the author smile and helps readers decide whether to purchase.
Thank you, Elizabeth Caroline; it was a pleasure to read and review your book. Keep me in mind for the next one.

Great first book of the series!

Detained for many years at a research facility, undergoing tests and treatment, Claudia, now at the age 16, had to leave for good. But escape was her only option as others wanted to experiment with life threatening consequences. Her only true friend, Dr J, gave her an envelope and told her to leave immediately. Claudia had to run or become just another statistic, but she was on her own. Her gift together with the contents of the envelope would hopefully lead her to the truth.
A great unravelling story that keeps you gripped throughout, not really knowing which path it's going to take. The main character has a unique, solitary backstory, full of mistreatment both physically and mentally, kept away from any aspects of 'normal' life which makes an interesting read when she ventures into the complexity of the real world. But the innocence of Claudia fits perfectly into this heartwarming romance as she draws on many different emotions to become socially acceptable and find her own love.
There is so much more this story can give, in many directions and ill be interested to read more to see which path it will follow. Really enjoyed, great job!

This book was nothing what I expected it to be.

I think I was thinking something more along Stranger Things which was unfair because nothing about this book said it was similar.

I was expecting more fantasy. More powers. More revenge.

And that's not what this book is. I struggled with that at first but I'm really glad I pushed through. Because the more I kept reading, the more I enjoyed this story.

Adapted is such an appropriate name for this book because that's really what it is. Claudia adapting to her new life. She never had a real family or real friends. The one time she thought she would have a family, it did not end well. At the research center, Dr. J could only be so much of a friend.

Once Claudia escapes and finds her biological father, she finds a home. And with that home, she finds friends - and something more.

This book is about Claudia, finding herself. And I thought it was really well done. The way Claudia has to learn to navigate this new life is the heart of this book.

The writing itself isn't anything spectacular and there were some situations that really don't make any sense. However, the relationship building is what makes this story shine.

I would recommend this book if you are a character driven reader and enjoy a main character really finding her own. If you can look past some plot points, this book is really going to shine.

No freaking way! 😱😱😱 The total cliffhanger caught me completely off guard! I loved the story, though. It was clean, romantic and had everything I like about a good book. The paranormal part of it wasn’t so much my thing, because I can’t really relate to it, but that’s just me. I loved the created relationships, and whenever I wasn’t reading the novel, I was thinking about it wondering what would happen next. If you love paranormal meeting reality and enjoy a good romance between teenagers as well as suspense and heartbreak, this one is for you. I can’t wait for the sequel to get released!!!

‘Adapted’ was a pleasure to read.

Caroline does a great job with character and setting. Claudia, wise beyond her years, is instantly likeable. Her powers aside, she also has a vulnerability we can all relate to. The side characters, including Claudia’s family and classmates, round out her circle and are equally unique.

The author’s depictions of high school slice-of-life were believable. I also liked the slow burn of the romantic subplot. Wholesome with just enough of a twist at the end that has me eagerly anticipating the sequel- Ice.

Claudia experiences several foster care placement breakdowns and ends up being sent to live in a research facility where she becomes wise to the fact that others want to use her to tap into her special abilities. During her quest for acceptance she meets a boy named Solomon and the story has you turning the pages to find out whether she can truly invest in him as a partner she can trust... or not?
A lovely narrative with rich descriptive scenes and dystopian twist. Well done!

I just finished this book and I really enjoyed reading it.  I don't want to give any spoilers so i am just going to stick with a few things that i really liked about it.

I loved the small cosy family setting, the high-school friendship part, and the light romance to go along.

It is a story about  a teenager with paranormal powers, who has been through a lot in life. It focuses on the inner struggles of the girl, how she is trying to accept her new life with  friends and family. And how her past haunts her.

This story ends on a cliffhanger. Which left me in numb!  I can't  wait to read the next book, actually  dying to read it.

Special thanks to the author, Elizabeth for providing me a copy.

Elizabeth Caroline helps us escape an experimental facility on our quest for normal in Adapted: Heat! Claudia has a special ability, one that the facility she’s been raised in tries to nurture for their own purposes. But when her one friend winds up dead, Claudia escapes to figure out who did it, only to be sidetracked by the lure of living a normal life in a normal school. I really enjoyed the moral struggle and crisp writing Caroline imbued in Heat! Claudia was a fascinating and lovable character, and I really loved the Stranger Things/X-Men feel of the book! If you love YA ‘escape from a facility and must hide your powers’ thrillers, definitely come seek your brand of normal with Adapted: Heat!

From mystery to romance, the book ‘Adapted’ by Elizabeth Caroline is a complete treat. The plot revolves around Claudia, a specially a abled girl, who has a unique ability with heat. Her early life and struggles at the research center, where she was treated as a transgenic animal, are emotionally appealing. Whereas her school life will take you back to your memories.

The plot is perfectly balanced by thriller, mystery, science, romance and emotions. Claudia’s relationship with her family, friends, especially Solomon, and Dr.J, are portrayed very well. The gripping story line has the ability to maintain the curiosity level throughout the read. And the book concludes leaving many mysteries unfold, forcing the readers to anxiously wait for the next part.

In short, the author has succeeded in mixing up mystery and science with romance, even providing a gap for sentiments, and serving the readers with all its feel.

Book Review for Adapted Book One: Heat
⭐⭐⭐⭐

"We don't control what happens in our life, but we can control how we react to them"

That is one way to see in 2021, with an utterly enthralling heart racing, dystopian style last decade novel. My heart is still racing from the passion in the last two chapters. I expected science, thrill & mystery, and I got so much more. I got passion and teenage romance, taking me back to my own love at first sight, I love a book that recalls your own memories, that takes quite a skill, and I just fell completely in love with this book.

It was thrilling & exhilarating, and mysterious enough to give you what you needed to know for this story, but clever enough to keep some back for the next.
This is a book I will have eager eyes on for the next Elizabeth Caroline, you cannot leave me on such a cliffhanger.

Claudia has a unique ability with heat, magically distorted skills that no normal family can cope with. She is taken into an experimental facility, for years, poked and prodded, changed and cloned, until she suspects all is not what it seems. On the threat of danger, she flees into the arms of the father she never knew. Her ready made family, a new boyfriend, best friends, and her powers. The perfect life. But she can never quite escape her past in capture, how could she when the transition was so easy, and it seems those around her may not be so 'normal and perfect' either.

Adapted: Heat was such a refreshing read from other YA books I’ve read. There’s nothing dark and gritty about this book, which is just what I love in a fantasy novel. It uniquely combines fantasy world with our modern real world.

Claudia was born with a unique ability to control heat. She was raised in a research facility where she was being experimented on and trained to control her powers. When her only ally ends up dead, she escapes the facility on a quest to find his killer. What she finds, as she emerges into a normal world, is a connection to her roots and a host of new friends.

This book has all the ingredients I love: suspense, intrigue, suspicious deaths and romance, all told in a beautifully descriptive and captivating way. Claudia is a wonderfully endearing character and I love that she’s able to transport to any part of the world on a whim. I was charmed by Solomon and the other characters and can’t wait to see them return in book two. Overall, a lovely debut novel by Elizabeth Caroline.

An innocent romance

I really enjoyed the plot of the story and how she learns to overcome her fears. I was expecting more action and use of her powers, but I actually liked the way it focussed on her and her journey to love and acceptance. It's not so much about a superhero falling in love. It's about a girl who happens to have a superpower and also falls in love. I guess if I were to put a movie quote to this book, it would be something like "I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy, ..." Hahaha.

But I really loved the story, the plot, and the characters. It was a simple, innocent romance between 1 (possibly 2) genetically enhanced teenagers, with the odd flair of suspense.

After reading this book all I could think was I need a Solomon in my life.

This book follows a 16 year old orphan girl Claudia who was born with the ability to control heat, she has been used for testing in a facility and been rejected her whole life which leads to her having no trust in people.

After finding her long lost father she also stumble into Solomon when she starts the local school, and it is about their love that the story is based around.

This is such a sweet love story about learning to open up and trust people, it will leave you daydreaming at times and wondering if Solomon exists.

Not for me - as slow starting despite fab inciting incident & the blurb could highlight more magical/fantasy elements

This is my first DNF in a long long while. I tried to read until page 100/378, but gave up since the descriptive style of writing and slow plot progression just wasn’t for me - I love fast-paced books and aside of the exciting intro incident nothing much seemed to happen here in the first 100 pages. While camping, orphaned 7yo Claudia discovers she is a firestarter. She is stuck in a research facility and when the only friendly doctor there dies & the death is written up as a suicide, teenage Claudia is on a mission to find out the truth. She goes looking for the father who abandoned her at birth to enlist his help in battling the world and then the doc who’s supposed to be dead turns up actually dead. While this last bit did pique my interest as the book has hopes for veering into a murder mystery, it wasn’t sufficient for me to keep reading. Maybe it’s coz I need a harhar book after the day of doing my taxes, maybe it’s just my preferences and the book is fine - always have a gander at a sample to make up your mind, ok? Still, 2🌟 as all authors deserve kudos for writing up complex stories.

Recommended perhaps for more middle-grade readers who like slowly unravelling mysteries and kids with superpowers?

Young teenage Claudia has grown up in an orphanage for most of her life believing her parents are dead. However she has been experimented on because of her abilities with fire and when she escapes with the help of one of doctors at the facility she arrives at the town of Westpoint where she learns some startling truths including the fact that her dad is alive. As the initial shock wears off she agrees to move in with her new found dad and his family and they work at getting to know each other which is rather awkward at first as she doesn’t know how to act around people and she has to navigate the new school she starts at too. But she manages to forge a few friendships including a rather special one with the high school hunk, Solomon. Despite all this though the ghost of the facility she escaped from is still over the horizon which leads to a devastating showdown with the nefarious doctors including one mysteriously called Dr Q. This is a good origin story for a young adult superhero. It is mostly story driven with much of the book taken up by the trials, tribulations and anxieties of a teenager with some superhero shenanigans added to the mix especially when she has to go back to the facility she escaped from. It feels like the stage has been set for an epic second book which I can see is available so I am eager to check it out to see what happens next.

The story revolves around Claudia, whose childhood has was not normal. She was separated from her family and born with a special ability to control heat.

⚡After being rejected by various foster homes, Claudia is finally sent to live in a research facility where she quickly learns that some people are more interested in exploiting her abilities than helping her.
⚜Finally accepted, Claudia must now learn to trust those who try to befriend her, amongst whom is a popular and handsome boy named Solomon.

🔅Could his interest in her truly be as genuine as he wants her to believe, or could opening her heart to him lead to her downfall?
📍Read the novel to find out...

🔖🔖 Synopsis::
🔅 The novel is a nostalgic ride. I first encountered love as a dominant emotion in the novel, but there is a mix of emotions used in the book ranging from science, suspense and romance.
⚡The narration was on point. The language used is lucid and simple to understand.

🖇🖇There is a detailed work done by the author on the plot and characters.
🔅The centric emotion of having trust issues in life has been brought out organically the author. Would be waiting for Part2..

The Adapted by Elizabeth Caroline has everything we love, a great story, strong world building, and a lead character with difficult childhood but still standing on her own feet. And oh my God! the writing is so so good. Don't hesitate, you'll thank me later.

Wow, wow, wow!!

I love this book. I love the writing. And I'm absolutely hooked on the story. The time I finish this book, I can't wait to read the next one from Elizabeth Caroline. It's fascinating how the author connects the dots, and keeps on writing spellbinding storylines.

If you love thriller , mystery , suspence and teenage romance with a blend of science fiction, with a kick ass characters and an amazing cast you'll Love this book.

I don't know how the author does it, but this book just gets better and better with each turning page. I stayed up way too late finishing this up because I just couldn't put the book down. I just love it when a book grabs you right at the beginning and you can just sink down into the story as if you are right there.

Flushed with emotions!
No drama. Instead amazing world building, and one fabulous plot.

A book I can only recommend!!!

16 year old Claudia’s life has so far been anything but normal, a series of failed foster homes followed by many years in a research facility being experimented on due to her unusual abilities. Escaping the facility gives her a chance of a normal life but adjusting isn’t easy.

This was a refreshing read, a heart warming cosy romance with some fantasy thrown in. A perfect blend. Having being kept away from all aspects of normal life, main character Claudia has an innocence and naivety unlike the other teens her age. I really enjoyed watching her grow throughout, and learn how to integrate with both her schoolmates and into family life, letting herself be cared for by others and learning how to love and trust.

It would have been good to learn more about the experiments that were done on her and the reason for them which was touched upon towards the end. Only a minor point which I’m hoping could be developed more in future books.

Overall Adapted book one was a great read and l’m looking forward to reading book 2.

fun and exciting YA novel with some unexpected twists.

Claudia isn’t like other kids her age. She was taken to a facility at a young age and endured all manner of experiments performed on her but after her escape, she finds her father and begins a new life. One filled with love and friendship and all sorts of normal high school experiences.
But her past is going to catch up with her, and Claudia uncovers the truth of what they were really doing at the facility where she was held.
This book ends with the story complete but with an opening for book 2. Looking forward to reading more.

This is a beautifully layered story about found family and emotional healing. It has a sharp edge of suspense while making the magic and super-human elements normalised and believable. Claudia is incredibly human, despite her extraordinary circumstances. The research centre has left scars, and this young lady is out for revenge. I love the way she finds her people, but doesn’t know how to be with them.

A traumatic, institutionalised past gives the novel tension that keeps you hooked.

The book balances emotional intimacy with a simmering sense of looming danger. The romantic subplot is tender, under the deeper themes of finding identity and resilience.

Claudia’s unravelling of what it means to be free—especially when your freedom comes with secrets and scars—is compelling and authentic. It’s a book that pulls you in and holds on. I loved it.
