The world stopped seconds after the EMP was detonated. No communication, no transportation, no power. Hundreds of millions of people are suddenly alone and afraid. With food and water in short supply, people are scrambling for resources. But fighting for your next meal might not matter if you can't stay warm during the worst winter storm in years.
This starts out in a fairly standard EMP story way. Troy needs to have watched shows like "The Walking Dead" to realize that every time you fail to deal with a bad guy, it comes back to bite you later. Julia's story is more of a survival story since she is stranded in poor weather. Troy and Leo and their sons have a storyline where the EMP is only a way to unleash terrible people and since everyone seems to have an old car or motorcycle there was not even much interruption in transportation. While there are some likable qualities in the main good-guy characters, most everyone is one dimensional. There are almost no good people that you come across and the most interesting person is a bad guy that becomes an ally to defeat the really bad guys. I am not sure where the Vances live, but I don't want to go there. Seems to be just one bridge out of town and the city is overrun by warring biker gangs that seemed way too prepared for the apocalypse, including an enslavement plan. I also didn't see the reason for the Viper gang to go to war and nearly wipe out the Reds, only with the intent to leave town. Maybe they are not sure what a turf war is? Toward the end of the book, it jumps forward from winter to summer and everyone is together; we miss how they all get to the Vance farm. Like a TV show that still has 10-15 minutes left, we know something is still wrong and sure enough, the same Viper baddies show up. So does the Red ally, who apparently has spent months just stalking the Vipers all on his own. Then it ends with rainbows. We never find out why the EMP occurred or much else about the aftermath of the disaster.
I'm taking for granted that the EMP that exploded over the United States was the same for all three stories which took place in different parts of the country. Each of the three stories had its own protagonists who faced different enemies, supposedly, these small wars all began on the same day. All three stories were engaging and kept my interest until the end. I was disappointed that the second story ended abruptly and with a cliffhanger. The final story was more thorough in its ending and showed a glimpse into the future...not certain it would also apply to the first two stories.
All in all, Off the Grid was a worthwhile read and kept me entertained for a while. I'd recommend it for all interested in a dystopian story that followed those who tried to survive when forced into a world dating back almost two centuries.
This trilogy of sorts was highly formulaic. Introduction to “good guy” who is fully prepared for the end of the world. In 2 of the 3 he is already deep in conflict with a arch-nemesis. When the world ends he has a performative-virtue moment where he decides if he’s a killer or not to save himself or someone else from a minor bad guy but there’s really no emotional conflict for him before he blows the other guys brains out. To top off all that, the chapter structure was very soap opera-as in chapters are ridiculously short but also start with a recap of where the character is and end with an ominous will-they-survive type line. It made the whole book very repetitive. And without any depth to the characters for understanding their drive to survive it was just a flat slog to get through.
This book has lots of enjoyable action, some of the stuff would’ve been very unrealistic, except that the two main characters are cops, so you could see them having the knowledge and the daring to be able to pull off some of these stunts. I’d recommend this book. It was a fun read! The only thing I didn’t care for was the way they jumped quickly from rescuing their sons, and heading to the cabin, to already being at the cabin for a while before the Williams homestead attack.
It’s true that desperation and fear will begin to rule this world if such destruction interrupts our easy and comfortable ways and means of living. Surviving becomes the norm and massive adjustments of our thinking will need to replace ordinary decisions. The author portrays this in absolute reality….a life gone mad. Evil becomes an everyday happening and the author rises to the levels required to survive.
The basic story is pleasant and has a happy ending but a lot of it was so unnecessary if only he had he wasn't a wuss and had shot the bad guy in the beginning. He allowed so many deaths by letting this guy live! I understand and agree violence would rule the day but time after time after time and even the violence gets boring!
Right from the start, it was action packed and moved along from 1 family member to the other. A nice touch keeping it contained to the 3 family members. The bridge jump scene near the end was a bit of an overreach though. Had it been 6 or 7 feet, then it would have been more believable. Overall, a good read!
This series isn't like other EMP Survival books. The books are okay but I found that each story (from all 3 books) were basically the same 🤔 Have to admit I had a hard time finishing the last book. Wouldn't recommend this series to anyone under the age of 21. Due to the subject matter and all the violence.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
This is a very action packed story of an EMP and the social fallout. It follows two families who were impacted and how the managed to survive the first year after the collapse of society. A very thought provoking story, well told with a satisfying conclusion!
Standard EMP/end of world. Decent action. Characters kind of sort of fleshed out. Many un-answered questions. Most circumstances were realistic. Others were a bit contrived and bets left to cliffhanger serials. Overall, decent read, recommended.
A good story that has followed another theme. I suggest that authors stop using the guilt over 16 year old sons being involved in warfare. This has happened from time immemorial, and should be acknowledged and feted rather than than cause sorrow.
I enjoyed this book very much. I was drawn in from the beginning, and I could not put the book down, I finished the book in an hour. Ok would tell anyone what a great read with plenty of action and suspence. I would love to read more of your books. Thank you.
Really enjoyed reading this EMP Survival book. Very well written and attention getting. This is possibly a true and scary reason everyone needs to be prepared for this type of event. Highly recommend reading.
I've read quite a few emp books and this one was very disappointing Cursing doesn't really bother me but it seemed like it was used just to fill in for words the only developed and likable character was the dog Buster More of a cop vs gang book. Disappointing
Fast and busy! Just the way I like my books to be. I enjoy the authors style only once in a while, in an action story, I feel he “waxes poetic” too often.
