The Cousin Curse

Rate this book
Luckily for Princess Viola, born without vocal cords, all Spectra siblings can speak mind-to-mind. But when her father assigns her to help solve a dispute in the Lakewood, only one can accompany her: ten-year-old Beck, who would rather play with his cousins than repeat her words. As the fight over Lakewood’s lumber intensifies, the only one who will listen is a giant of a human with an ax in his hand. Then Beck and his cousins are transformed into swans, leaving her without any interpreter. To solve the crisis, wade through manipulations, and save her family, she’ll have to find her voice—even though she’s never had one.

The Spectra Crown Tales can stand alone, but together they share the story of a fantasy world where humans and Spectra must learn to live side by side. Viola retells the stories of The Six Swans and Paul Bunyan.

Do you believe in magic? Fantasy and fairytale brought together?

In The Cousin Curse, the reader is brought into the world created by Christie Valentine Powell, The Spectra Crown Tales. First, the author is an amazing world builder, and her take on writing and rewriting old fairy tales into something fresh, new and improved, and just magic, tells you something about her passion for sharing her words with an audience. As you can tell, I am a big fan of this author, and though I never have expectations for anyone's work until I read it, I always know I will not be disappointed. This book is part of the Spectra Crown Tales, and is volume 6. The stories are all standalone, but I recommend reading each one, starting with the first one. In The Cousin Curse, the reader is enchanted by Princess Viola, who cannot speak, but those who are part of the Spectra family, can read each other's minds, and some translate for Viola. It's an amazing tale that puts a unique spin on the legend of Paul Bunyan and the fairy tale, The Six Swans, and with that, the magic happens, especially when Viola loses her translator, and has to find out how to save her family and her cousins, who were turned into Swans. Christie Valentine Powell not only tells the story but shows it with words as well. A reader can get lost in the story. This story is a timeless tale. Who could ask for more when it's filled with magical and fantastical beings? The Cousin Curse is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

Wow! What an amazing story! This one is based on the Six Swans from the Grimm bothers fairytales. The world building is incredible and the way each story builds on the others in this series makes reading them so satisfying!
