Nexus Station is a short story set in A.M. Scott’s Lightwave world. In this prequel we learn how Lightwave’s two security officers, Katryn and Tyron, first met.
The plot of this book was pretty good. I was really wondering how they were going to get out of their predicament. The pacing was good, just enough action to downtime.
On the other hand, I don’t know how I feel about the characters… It’s not that I didn’t like them, but I didn’t feel like they were the same characters as were in the first book (Lightwave: Clocker). The Katryn in this book didn’t seem as strong as the one I’d already met. But, this is a younger version, so maybe she grew as a person in the interim. Also, I felt like the relationship part was rushed and awkward. They’re a great partnership, but I would have expected everything to progress a little slower…
I gave it a 3.5 stars, but rounding up here to 4, because it wasn’t a bad story, I did enjoy it, but it just wasn’t a great story.
Although this is a prequel and I haven't read any of the series, I needn't have worried, Lightwave Nexus Station is a fabulous novella on its own.
Tyron is searching for a net tech, not trouble. Katryn needs a job to get her out of trouble. When she literally flattens him, it's a space race to the death to escape.
Set in a complex hard sci fi universe that manages to be understandable and mind blowing at the same time, the narrative romps along at a terrific pace, leaving barely a moment to breathe. The two main characters absolutely zing off the pages and I fell in love with both.
If this is any indication of the series as a whole, I can't wait to meet the full crew.
Light Wave Nexus Station is an interesting novella about a couple of folks looking for employment (and looking to employ), who just happen to fit the needs of the other. Things get interesting when it turns both are wanted on the station for different things. Their escape and evventual rescue is quite the amusing story, and one that makes me want to hunt down more books in this series.
Tyron is looking for a net tech in all the wrong places, because he is a wanted man. Katryn is looking for work because she has little experience due to her upbringing. Each of them are looking for something, will they find it in each other? You will have to read the story to find out, but I loved the characters and the story kept me glued to it until I finished the whole thing. I would recommend this book.
Fast and furious action, brilliant female lead and smart, hunky male hero all tossed together with hard science fiction and bad guy mercenaries. Great story! If you’re not a computer systems specialist, the beginning is a little difficult to follow but it doesn’t take long to catch up. Latch on and enjoy the ride!
Not great, but not terrible. Mostly it was just the white knight trope, and the part where this book wouldn't pass the Bechdel test even if there was another female character and the only two female characters were stranded, alone, on a deserted planet for decades. I wouldn't even really call it "good" and I wouldn't recommend it.
Even as a new reader unfamiliar with this world, I found it easy to get immersed in the action, and I was rooting for Tyron and Katryn to make their escape.
This was my first A.M. Scott story, but I already have more lined up on my e-reader. :)
The writing was well done. I wasn't on board with the insta-love, and I didn't like that Katryn was constantly described as small, fragile, delicate, virginal, etc. Do not like that in a romance. Minus the romance stuff, it was exciting, flowed well, and was a fun read.
On the run in this prequel, I also purchased this as a stand-alone Kindle book, purchased 4 book set. Purchased this edition on January 1, 2024, from Amazon for free.
Plenty of aliens on both sides of Katryn's escape. Lots of computer system and network hacking. An unusually powerful romance drives the partnership and leads to excessive risk taking.
