About the author

Guru Prasad Mainali (Nepali: गुरुप्रसाद मैनाली) was a Nepali short story writer and is one of three well-known writers of Nepali literature, along with Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and Laxmi Prasad Devkota. He is famous for his short story anthology 'Naaso'.

Mainali's works contributed to the development of Nepali short stories. Altogether, Mainali wrote only eleven short stories, but his knowledge of the Nepalese society made him an excellent describer of the life in the country side. His stories alone possessed all the qualities of modern short stories during his time. He started writing stories to publish in a literary magazine, 'Sharada (Devnagari: शारदा)'. His first story was 'Naso' (The Ward). Most of his stories were published in the period between 1935 and 1938. Strongly influenced by Prem Chand, the famous Hindi fiction writer, Mainali intimately dealt with his characters from rural Nepal.

Due to his contact with different kinds of people in different parts of the country as a judge transferred from one district court to the other, Mainali had ample opportunity to study the human character in various situations at close quarters. His description of the sad plight of the common people in Nepal due to constraints imposed upon individuals by traditional values and beliefs made in his stories remains unmatched even today. He is arguably the first modern short story writer of Nepal. Some of his unforgettable short stories are 'Naso' (The Ward), 'Paralko Aago' (A Blaze in the Straw), 'Shaheed' (The Martyr) and 'Chhimeki' (Neighbors). Naso is also the title of his anthology.

Some of his stories are included in text books of primary school and secondary schools in Nepal.

छोटो कथाहरु लेख्नु भनेको कुनै सजिलो कला हैन। चन्द पानाहरुमा लेखकले अनेक भाव, पात्र र एउटा सुन्दर कथा प्रस्तुत गर्न सक्नु पर्छ। यो सबै गुरु प्रसाद मैनालीले सजिलो र रचनात्मक रूपमा गर्नसक्ने भएकाले उनको छोटो कथाहरुलाई अब्बल मानिन्छ ।

नासो गुरु प्रसाद मैनालीद्वारा रचेको एउटा छोटो कथाहरुको सङ्कलन हो । यस सङ्कलनमा रहेका कुनै नकुनै कथा भने नेपालीहरुले अवश्य पनि पढेकानै होलान भन्ने सोच्छु । उनका कथाहरुमा २००७ साल पूर्व र पश्चात्को अवधिको समय र समाजको बारे गरेको तितो मीठो चित्रण पाईन्छ। लैङ्गिक असमानता, जातिवाद, भेदभाव हरु जस्ता अनेक बिषयहरु लेखकले यस सङ्कलनमा उठाएका छन्।

About Author:
He was a Nepali Short Story Writer and is one of the well known writers of Nepali Literature along with BP koirala and Laxmi Prasad Devkota. "Paralko Ago" was selected on Himalayan Voices: An Introduction to Modern Nepali Literature by Michael James Hutt (1991).

All the stories were written before 2007 B.S and later published as a book .

Naaso is collection of 11 short stories about the time and the customs of the old Nepali society.
Story full of emotions and lesson. Heart touching.
It's an artistic masterpiece.

कर्तव्य (Duty)
Story about a big brother who forget all the old dispute to protect the prestige and family norms. His rightful duty.

Story about a man who still can't forget his childhood love.

शहीद (The Martyr)
Story about a man who lays down his life in the struggle against the Ranas.


बिदा (The Farewell)
Story about two lover separated by the caste system.

Story about orphan young widow Gauri and Govinda who is afraid of the society to accept her.

Story of boy and his motherly sister in law about the importance of family and care.

नेपाली साहित्यमा रुचि राख्नेका लागि गुरुप्रसाद मैनाली नौलो नाम हैन । त्यसमाथि पनि कथा भनेपछि मैनालीका कथा जत्तिका अब्बल कथाहरु आजका मीतिमा पनि कमै पढ्न पाइन्छ । मैनालीको सहीद, छिमेकी, कर्तव्य जस्ता कथाहरु त स्कुले पाठ्यक्रममै पनि समावेश छन् । तिनै कथा संग्���हमा पढ्दा एक-एक वाक्य दोहोऱ्याएर पढे झैं हुन्छ । विद्यालयमा शिक्षकले संवादहरु फरक फरक छात्रलाई पढ्न दिएका दिनको याद आउंछ ।
“ पोलेको घाऊमा नुन ना छर् कान्जा, मो आधाम हो, क्षामा गर् !”
“ आमाको पुकार स्भन्दा, वास्नी छोराछोरीको पुकार ठूलो होइन ।”
“ठीक भन्यौ! कुकुर अज्ञानी पशु हुनाले बोलाएपछि मात्रै जान्छ; मानिस चाहिं ज्ञानवान् हुनाले बखतमौका विचार गरेर आफैं पनि जानुपर्छ ।”

माथिका हरफहरु विद्यालय वेला देखिकै कण्ठस्त अनि कतिको त सन्दर्भ, प्रसंग र व्याख्या गरिएको हरफहरु मध्ये पनि पर्छन् । तिनै बेला मैनालीलाई आदर्शवादी कथाकार भनेर पनि लेखियो । तर संग्रहमा दुःखान्त वा आदर्श अन्त्य नभएका कथा पनि तमाम छन् । युग अनुसारको र कतिपय अवस्थामा केहि प्रगतिशील लाग्ने विचर पनि रचनामा सामेल छन् । ईतिहासका छाया पनि कथामा परेको भेट्न सकिन्छ । सहीद कथा पढ्दा केहि दशक अघि विद्रोहीको टाउकाको मोल तोक्नेहरु आफै विद्रोही थिए भन्ने पाटो खुल्छ । विद्यालयमा यी कुरा उति ध्यान दिइएन तर मुक्ती सेना त उबेला कांग्रेसीले पनि बनाएका थिए । सशस्त्र संघर्ष उनीहरुले पनि गरेका थिए । यी कुरा मैनालीले कथामा मज्जाले घुसाएका छन् ।

कथामा महिलाको चित्रण प्राय सेविका, पीडित र पुरुषको सन्दर्भमा परिभाषित पात्र मात्रै छ । केहि कथामा समाजको विद्यमान नियम कानुन उल्लंघनका असफल प्रयास पनि समेटिएका छन् । प्रयाश्चित, विदा र चिताको ज्वाला पढ्दा त्यो भान हुन्छ । ७० वर्ष अघिको कथाहरुमा कति खोज्ने भन्ने पनि हुन्छ ।

कथाहरु एकै स्वादका छैनन् । पात्रहरुमा विविधता छ । विविध समुदायका पात्रहरु कथामा अटेका छन् । घटनाक्रमहरु पनि सधैं सुखद मात्रै पनि छैन । पात्रहरु निर्मम तरिकाले मारेका पनि छन् । सुखद अन्त्य भएका कथा पनि छन् । जे होस् नेपाली कथामा चांसो हुने वा लेख्न चाहनेले पढ्ने एउटा आधार पुस्तक नासो हो । यो सिक्नैका लागि पनि राम्रो छ । लेख्दाको सत्ता प्रतिको विचार पछि कसरी असुहाउंदो लाग्छ भन्ने पनि यो पढ्दा ज्ञान हुन्छ ।
राजिनामामा भेरव अर्यालले मैनालीको कथाका बारेमा गरेक प्रशंसाले यो किताब फेरि समाउन कर लगाएको हो । पुराणमा आधारित रचनाको विगविगि भएका बेला समाजमा आधारित मौलिक कथाहरु आउनुको महत्व उनले खुलाएपछि यो किताब अझै महत्वपूर्ण लागेको हो । अहिले पढ्दा पनि हालसम्म पझेका कथाहरु मध्ये एकदमै अब्बल कथा मैनालीका लागे भन्दा ढांटेको हुंदैन । पढ्नुस्, गुन्नुस् र समाजमा आएको परिवर्तनका बारेमा पनि गम्नुस् ।

Every story of Mainali is a work of artistry. His craftsmanship in getting the Nepali Short Stories a separate identity cannot be overlooked. NASO has and will always be a distinct work of art that'll find a place in the heart of its readers and in the topmost shelf of Nepali Literature.
