Using a bold contemporary art style, the comic presents every word of the biblical Gospel of Mark, within its historical, cultural and geographical context.
It employs a high view of scripture and the translation used is the World English Bible.
It is part of the graphic novel series, The Word for Word Bible Comic. Aimed primarily at adults and young adults, but suitable for ages 12+.
The Story: After a brief time of liberty under the Hasmoneans, the people of Israel are once again under the boot of a foreign superpower. The Romans rule and tax every part of their world: water-tax, city-tax, road-tax, house-tax, even a tax on necessities like meat and salt. These fees were often 'harvested' by their own Jewish brothers, who would pay the oppressors and then skim off a little or a lot for themselves.
For centuries, the Israelites have clung to the promise of a Messiah, one who would change everything. But this saviour is not what they’d thought he would be.
I've held back from ordering one of these comics for a while as I wasn't sure how I felt about the Word of God in this format. But after following the page on Facebook for some time now, I've been able to see "behind the scenes" as it were. And with a teen nephew who is struggling in his walk with Christ, I felt this could be an avenue for him to access God's Word in a format which he can understand clearly so I went ahead and ordered the Gospel of Mark.
Once I received it, I read through thoroughly and was really impressed! My worries of God's Word possibly being sensationalised and/or mistranslated in this format disappeared - particularly due to the fantastic extra information given at the end that demonstrates the process behind the making of the comic. So I'm now going to order the other 'books' too and become a patreon to support future projects!
This graphic novel version make the story come to life visually, and has enriched my understanding of the context in which the events took place. My teenage sons have also really enjoyed reading it and found it is more engaging than text alone. I love the fact that it is historically and textually accurate. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get to know the Bible but prefers the more visual experience and reading-style of a comic.
Plenty of artwork. Careful to include nothing that is not in the bible. The eye of the needle is easily explained. A defensive wall inside a city would have an opening that a horse back rider couldn't get thru. If a camel with goods approached this doorway, he would have his goods carried through. Then camel would be forced to kneel and crawl through the opening. A rich man would be divested of his wealth and forced to prostrate himself to get into heaven.
Excellent book! They really worked hard to make it as historically accurate as they could. It is well draw and thoroughly planned out. Great for young people and older children. Fun to show the kids in your Sunday school class. It is the only Bible Comic without any verses missing! I highly recommend it to almost anyone especially for families with children.
Not my favorite version but a good strong rendering. Pillario has obviously done his research and it shows. His thoughtful representations and occasionally interpretations of certain events are refreshingly done. At times his drawings are heart-warming and he even includes [in drawing form] information not in Mark but is in the other Gospels.
I am so happy to have come across these novels. These guys really did their homework (look at the end of each book). Each book is excellently done. I highly recommend each one you can get your hands on. Keep up the good work guys! I hope you continue to get funding and publish each book of the bible. God bless!
Well researched and thoughtfully drawn. The images portray the account in amazing detail. The end notes are evidence of the great work and care put into this project!
Great method to read the bible and keep the attention span at the same time. Also great tool to help remember and visualise the passages. Definitely recommended
I found this book through Bible Gateway Blogger Grid. For more about the series check out the blog, Word for Word Bible Comic.
Pillario does a stellar job at combining his illustrations with actual text from the NIV Gospel of Mark. He doesn’t shy away from some of the tougher topics such as the scourging and crucifixion of Christ. Therefore, it may not be appropriate for some readers under 12.
I received this book FREE from the author, publisher, distributor, or other source. My only obligation is to provide a fair and honest review
good. I do wish the descriptive text was more readable.
Descriptive text: the biblical text that describes the scene. Since this was not needed as the images conveyed the information, it was included in between the panels. However, it was in a text not much darker than the page background and VERY hard to read.
