Through pregnancy, birth and early childhood, Rachel Bower’s poetry takes us on an unsentimental journey from womb to world. Along the way, she explores the largely unmapped territories of loss, bewilderment, shame, transformation and betrayal, and reclaims the intimate histories, mythologies and wisdom our bodies share.
This thought-provoking collection takes a frank, unflinching look at the joys and challenges of modern parenting, moving seamlessly between the mysterious, almost magical stages that make us what we are – people who create people.
There is one poem in this collection which I will never forget, about a fruit market, the layout on the page and the vivid nature of the words used and how they interacted and danced with each other absolutely blew mind and I am absolutely in love with it. At first I found this collection hard to connect with due to the nature of the poems being about pregnancy, motherhood and childbirth, however after discussions with friends I believe this collection is of value for anyone struggling with themselves or who wants to experience the ups and downs of life through another perspective, if for nothing else, the beauty of the language which Bower uses (whether for positive or negative impact) definitely has a direct impact on you as you read. Wonderful collection.
