Penelope Blake is an atypical young woman who would rather search for ghosts in a haunted house than try to find her prince charming at a ball. Desperately trying to escape her dull suitors and encouraged by the sarcastic ghost of her late pirate grandfather, Nathaniel Blackdeather, Penny is on the constant lookout for adventure! Anything but yet another boring aristocrat! In a world of magical critters and accompanied by her new found friend and his parrot, Penny finally finds the adventure she's been looking for, and this magical experience will colour her life, quite literally.
Very funny comic about a young woman with adventure in her heart and a dead grandfather in her head. Beautifully drawn and coloured, I highly recommend you give it a whirl.
This is a wonderful little book, I enjoyed everything about it! Initially what caught my eye were the illustrations, which are lovely and with a great use of colour; mostly black and white, with highlights of blue throughout, until the adventure changes location (not to give too much away!) and the story becomes a full-colour action comic. The characters are great fun, Penny as the free-spirited adventurer trying to escape dancing at balls and suitors and 'ladylike' restraints, and her mysterious companion who manages to not quite believe in magic even up to the very end. There is also a lot of humour in the book, which I loved. I am very much hoping there will be more to this story, as I would love to read more of Penny's adventures!
I don't read many graphic novels because I'm not a visual person so I'm definitely not an expert here with an expert opinion! I enjoyed the art, I loved the small details and the use of colour (keep an eye on princess, there's a whole world going on with her expressions). The story is fun, mixing a lightly drawn Regency world with some magical monsters. We're introduced to a lot of fun characters, particularly towards the end and I definitely wanted to see more of them so very glad that there's a second volume!
I remember *being* Penny, a bright, imaginative girl, hemmed in by the demands of mundane society. It's just my imaginary friend wasn't my dead pirate grandfather, and I never got to meet a magician on the run with his very interesting pet parrot. Penny's adventures will appeal to anyone who ever wanted to go out and buckle a swash. I recommend this book highly.
Very enjoyable comic, my favorite characters so far are Princess, the hedge-witch and Hieronymus Bugbear. I also relate very much to Penny's ability to get lost in 30 seconds flat.
A very enjoyable read. I loved every bit of it. I have read this volume as a webcomic and I really enjoyed it a lot. I am very happy to have that copy of this volume.
I am looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds.
