Earth Shattering Events : Volcanoes, earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis and other natural disasters

Rate this book
An atlas of the most extreme meteorological and geological disasters that nature has to offer!

We humans take our domination of the planet for granted, but sometimes nature reminds us that this is an illusion. Tectonics rip open the earth, vast waves sweep away coastal towns, magma spews from volcanoes and hurricanes lay waste to entire countries.

This book explores nature at its most destructive. Clear, coherent explanations break down the science behind phenomena includ- ing hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, alongside fascinating facts about the biggest and the worst. Informative, accessible illustrations by Sophie Williams make this so much more than your standard geography book.

.It is wonderful little science book. It deals with natural disasters which are gradually becoming commoner with extensive human intervention into homeostasis of nature.

It has cute little diagrams but some serious science is delivered in enjoyable way.
It is for teens but adults can get new things out of it.
Each disaster is detailed from its definition to how it occurs.
And most useful part is advice given about what to do at time of these natural disasters.
A book with practical use and acts as primer to sensitize our young people towards biological catastrophe we are causing.
I will highly recommend it to everyone.
Thanks publisher and edelweiss plus for review copy.

Delightful, cheerful, and a very grim topic -- this is a sweet spot for early elementary kids. It would be fun for early readers or for cosy family sharing. The large pages have clear explanations and engaging illustrations to show large and small scale details of all the super charged events the earth can serve up.

I did trip over an error -- there are two listed "largest hail stones" -- one in South Dakota and one in Asia. Still, at roughly a kilogram both are large enough to be worth mentioning!

Divided into two parts (geological disasters and meteorological disasters) and covering a wide range of natural disasters (earthquakers, tsunamis, volcanoes, avalanches, tropical cyclones, tornadoes, blizzards and hailstorms, wildfires, climate change and "natural diasters", this browsing-type of book gives a nice overview of each topic, with cutaway diagrams, charts, maps, cartoons, sidebars, and more. The most remarkable of disasters are featured on 2-page maps of the world, pointing to where the disaster occurred and including a line or two about its importance.

Jacobs does an admirable job of introduction and basic explanation of each. Illustrations by Sophie Williams are bold and colorful, cartoonish in style with bold black outlines. They are generally simple, yet effective.

This British publication retains British spellings, ex. "centre", which does not pose a problem. Confusion could arise by retaining metric measurements in the book, ex. Japan moved "2.4 m" after the 2011 Tōhoku Tsunami will likely be read by American students as 2.4 miles and not 2.4 meters (or 8 feet). Tornado wind measurement is done in kmh - reading much higher than U.S. mph. Interestingly enough, the chart measuring storm surge is given in feet, not meters.

While not bad, there are better presentations of this browsing-type material available for the American market.

Additional for grades 1-5.

I want to say that I love this book...but it's a little terrifying. In a good way? That's a thing right? It was easy to give it 5 stars. It is packed with information about all kinds of events - volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, wild fires. The information is detailed and well presented. My son who is fascinated by all kinds of natural disasters can not get enough of this book. He has been absorbing it - that's the only way to describe how he's repeatedly reading it - for two weeks now. If your child has questions about natural disasters this is a great book to read with them. I also love that it includes what you should do to stay safe with each event. My son finds those sections very comforting (as do I). Wonderful nonfiction for kids.
