Opposites attract when a cheerful airhead meets the resident wallflower of his new class in this heartwarming, slice-of-life school comedy series!

A new school year means new lessons, new friends, and new...rivals? When rumors about the infamous “Grim Reaper” reach the ears of a self-proclaimed “witch,” will Nishimura meet her gloomy match? Later, what will Adachi do when she spies Hino getting chummy with a taller, prettier classmate? And how will Takada react when he receives a heartfelt love letter—not from Nishimura, not from Kasahara, but from a girl he’s never met? Sixth grade is off to a rousing start!

Most of this volume is the usual vignettes, so a synopsis would keep me here for hours. Suffice to say, if you liked this series before, you probably will again by the time this volume winds up.

It’s still cute, but five double-sized volumes of the same joke does mean that it’s experiencing a little bit of a diminished return, no matter how wholesome and uplifting it is.

Still, it remains a good time watching Nishimura actually enjoy herself at school, frequently with Takada’s unwitting help. Everybody is doing their thing as usual, which is satisfying but somewhat retreading the same ground.

Of course, the mangaka knows this and continues to mix things up a bit with new characters. Unlike the very amusing Sora, who is woefully underused this volume, not all of these hit the mark.

Both the crazy competitive athlete girl and the early bloomer girl are okay, but not as strong as previous additions. I do like that the early bloomer has a problem with girls thinking she’s after their crushes just because she’s developing faster, although it’s not as good a storyline as it could be.

The only really dramatic bit is when Takada receives a confession, but it’s not really a patch on the stuff with Kasahara from last volume, which was incredibly effective. Better to try than not, but this isn’t the series at its best.

Speaking of Kasahara, she doesn’t really branch out much from her usual self and, as befits the series right now, she just kind of treads water in terms of hewing to her one joke. Although the new guy who has a crush on her is pretty funny.

The one big thing this volume does having going for it is Rina, the amazing Gothic Lolita character who is the version of Nishimura that craves all the attention and curse powers rather than shying away from it.

Rina is absolutely hilarious and the highlight here. She’s a master of all sorts of occult powers (online) and her admiration of Nishimura, which leans into the series’ usual gag style really well, is a hoot. If these chapters were all as strong as the ones where Rina shows up, it would be a full star higher.

3.5 stars - that extra half star is definitely on account of Rina’s introduction to the series. Otherwise this is a solid, enjoyable read that embraces its strengths while not iterating on them quite as successfully as before.

Volume 5 chapters 51-60 Complete!

The way this volume made me scream 👀. Christmas shopping + surprise confession. It’s literally making my heart race from the genuineness and wholesomeness of the situation.

I do wish that the wholesomeness will stay at is honestly as they are still kids. But i do wish them a wonderful and lovely childhood together as things are the way the are at the moment.
