Opposites attract when a cheerful airhead meets the resident wallflower of his new class in this heartwarming, slice-of-life school comedy series!
With the end of summer vacation for friendly Takada and gloomy Nishimura, school is back in session. The new semester brings new changes for all the kids in their elementary class, including Nishimura. Her unusual friendship with Takada is helping her to open up little by little! But will she revert back to a wallflower when the school sports festival rolls around in autumn and Takada gets hurt? Feeling responsible, Nishimura must steel herself to be more than a spectator at the festival for the very first time! Will Takada's enthusiasm carry her through?
Nishimura and Takada continue to survive as friends against all odds, including Nishimura suddenly finding a new friend. Then, everybody is having a field day, but Nishimura isn’t interested until Takada decides to make a clean break of things.
While I still don’t know that a double-stuffed volume of this story is the way to go, I have to admit that it manages to stay engaging throughout and it also continues to evolve the storyline beyond just retreading the first volume over and over again.
With a quietly expanding cast, Takada manages to make another friend, Umi, which casts a pall on her friendship with Takada while they figure things out. The school trip becomes a very cute reconciliation amidst all the usual chaos (plus lots of people being hoist by their own petard).
Umi’s a fun addition to the group and her crush on Hino is a good tweak to the friend dynamic. I love the way she gives Hino a hat for his birthday and he just casually wears it through the rest of the volume. It’s some very good storytelling about how much he likes the gift without being super obvious.
Some people, of course, never change, and Kitagawa continues to try and ostracize Nishimura to increasingly futile results. Watching this backfire on him constantly is a great source of joy and his laser focus often causes him to thwart other plans, such as the much sneakier Kasahara (fine, only a little bit sneakier).
It’s really hard to imagine that Takada isn’t a little less clueless than advertised, even after meeting his mother, as he seems quite capable at defusing every situation to the maximum positive outcome for either Nishimura or himself. He’s either especially adept at this or the second coming of Irresponsinle Captain Tylor.
Kasahara also becomes much more of a character this time around, with her burgeoning crush on Takada and her ‘too cool for this’ attitude that a lot of students develop as they age up. And, much like those students, it’s a mask that hides the true person inside.
While I wouldn’t say she becomes super likeable, Kasahara actually eases off the gas in her treatment of Nishitaka and when Nishitaka begs her for help after a very awkward moment, it gives Kasahara an excuse to have some fun and also absorb a little praise.
I especially liked the suggestion at the end of that storyline that Takada might be rubbing off on Nishikata a little, given her incredibly clueless interactions with Kasahara after sports day.
The afterword points out that this is meant to convey a very young infatuation of no real romance, but it’s either the way it’s written or an entire genre being how it is that you could age these characters up six years and have a perfectly good shojo title.
Yet, on the flip side, this captures a mood of that time in school very well. The accident on the playground, how terribly innocent people can be with very big emotions, the unending cruelty of bullies. It’s not the smoothest juxtaposition, but it does a good job.
4.5 stars - I think I’ll let this have another five because it did a great job keeping its momentum while also evolving. Just as Takada’s efforts threaten to become repetitive, we mix things up just enough. It’s subtly strong and feels about as self-assured as Nishikata isn’t.
This time around Nishimura and Takada get into more fun situations. They both become class reps only for a jealous girl, Kashara wants to join because she likes Takada but then Takada backs out, forcing her and Nishmura to work together. Then you have Umi who has a big crush on Hino, and askes Nishimura for help. There's also a race coming up, and they all have to work together as a class to win it!
Super cute and fun, light hearted, and always enjoyable. This is the type of series I enjoy just sitting back and vibing with. A 4 out of 5.
I'm too tired to say much more than "This is one of the sweetest, most affirming stories I've ever read, and I wish I'd had a Taiyo back when I was that age."
The volume seemed all over the place but those last few where Nishimura went to visit her grandmother was everything. The way we get to see the two interact in the countryside and how the two go to visit the Nishimura family grave.
Nishimura is paying her mother a visit and it dawns on Takada his actions. Nishimura tells him that her mother passes soon after she was born and she only knows of her mother through stories her father and grandmother tell her. She doesn't know her mom personally but still feels the connection regardless; "even if she feels like her mother's replacement."
Takada then puts two and two together. Her mother passing at her birth and the nickname "Grim Reaper" as if he was telling her that she caused her mother to die. The thought that he might have hurt his close friend was enough to make him cry endlessly. The regret and remorse he must be feeling makes me really really sad for the two of them.
This was so cute, adorable, and fun with tons of wholesome moments that made me go aww, plus it made me laugh how many of these peeps are shipping our duo, so cute. Though at times I am getting a bit tired of his positivity/enthusiasm, especially since he goes so far and at times it is just a bit painful. Plus, the bullying/teasing is just, please stop. I am happy that people are accepting her a bit more and she is making more friends, hopefully that bitchy Kasahara shows that one side a bit more over her angry deredere mode.
The plot was better in this one. Adding more characters helped broaden the interactions and there were some actual events and story arcs this volume. New friends and a lot of school events happen. I'm a bit miffed the author's afterword thing pretty much states there's romance in the future even if it's far off. Boy-girl friendship is up there with male romantic friendship in terms of rarity.
Loved this volume! I love the school festivals and sports events. The illustration style is so unique and I love these characters! I am also reading Komi Can't Communicate and I'm seeing some parallels between these characters. It makes me smile.
