Cattle King for a Day

Rate this book
Forged in the hot sun and sand of the Arizona desert, Chinook Shannon is as tough as they come—as steely-eyed and tall in the saddle as Randolph Scott. But Chinook is far from home—in the north country of Montana—and facing a challenge as big as the territory itself.

Following his grandfather’s suspicious death, he’s come to Montana to claim his inheritance—the family’s cattle ranch. But the territory’s crawling with bandits and bankers, and they all want a piece of Chinook’s land.

With foreclosure hanging over the ranch, Chinook’s got exactly twenty-four hours to find out who killed his grandfather and become the Cattle King. He’ll follow a trail of forgery, cattle rustling and murder to find the truth, knowing he has only one ally—his Colt Peacemaker.

Also includes the Western adventure “Come and Get It,” the story of an Easterner who comes to Wyoming to find out who killed his father—but discovers that the only way to get justice is to cook up a new identity for himself.

This book contains two of Hubbard's pulp Westerns, Come and Get It from the October, 1938 issue of Western Story Magazine and the titular story from the March, 1937 issue of All Western Magazine. Both tales feature young men who claim their rightful fortunes against terrific odds with perseverance and courage and determination. I thought Cattle King for a Day was the better of the two since Come and Get It intentionally misleads the reader (or perhaps just withholds necessary information) into drawing the wrong conclusion right up to the end. They're both good, standard pulp Western fare.

I really liked Chinook Shannon and all he had to go through to get his fortune. A twist ending as to who is the Bad Guy.

The second story is just as fun and pulpy. Bill is from the East and the boys turn their noses on him until he learns to shoot and Bill finds who is really holding him back.

Cool stories.

Its the literary equivalent of instant ramen noodles - quick and enjoyable but not complex and something which become an issue if it was all that you consumed. That said with it has mystery, handsome underdogs, devious bankers, cunning brutes and with fast paced action that is all wrapped up in prose that translates very well to the audiobook form.

Really great story. Chinook arrives in Montana ready to claim the family Ranch, and investigate the premature death of his grandfather. He encounters, lies, sabotage, and murder, but in the end he is the Cattle King. Really great read, and the audio book is excellent...it really draws you into the story.

A very good western where it seems impossible, but the impossible gets achieved.
