Mrs. Pilegard was raised on a cattle ranch in

California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Her latest mathematical adventure picture book is illustrated by British artist Fiona Hodgetts and translated by Maria Cassandra Nah Ayuso. Nicolas Debon, the artist with whom she collaborated on the Warlord Series, includes a horse somewhere in the illustrations in each of their seven books to celebrate her first love. Nicolas includes dragonflies in his illustrations as his own signature. Adrian Tans illustrated Mrs. Pilegard's eighth mathematical adventure picture book. Pilegard still lives in California's foothills with her husband Richard, three dogs, and a Maine Coon cat named "Jetsam."

Ratios: Puppets are stolen during desert trip, and they need to recreate them out of materials they have around. Chuan has to resize puppets so that the head he creates is 1/6 of the body he has. This is the only math. Math not included in the afterword, apart from asking the child what proportion the head of their puppet they created is part of the body.

This was another good living book but was again not really math-y like the first few. Interesting problem solving coupled with historical and cultural information made this story likable. However, I find myself disappointed that these books no longer appear math focused.

Chuan tries to help a group of traveling puppeteers, after a bandit raid seizes their puppets. This book focuses on introducing children to the concepts of proportion and includes directions for making your own sock puppets.
