The Rimes Trilogy #3

Awakening to Judgment

Rate this book
What do you do when everything you love is taken from you? Before the genies fled human space, they tested Jack Rimes. He survived their attacks and became stronger. Now the real enemy has been revealed, and it's more inhuman than the genies ever were. The metacorporations fled Earth when the United Nations cracked down on labor abuses, pollution, and playing one nation against another. But the metacorporations need Earth and the colonies to survive, so they've come back. With a vengeance. Rimes has seen cold-blooded warfare before, but the metacorporate soldiers--encased in synthetic bodies--have lost any connection with humanity. Their tactics are horrific, their willingness to commit atrocities boundless. And with Rimes, they push too far. What will he do once he has no reason to live? What will be his judgment?

I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. I joined the Air Force, and my career took me from coast to coast before depositing me in the St. Louis, Missouri area for several years. After a tour in Korea and a short return to the St. Louis area, I retired and moved to the greater Denver, Colorado metropolitan area.
I write speculative fiction, mostly science fiction and fantasy. My favorite writers over the years have been Robert E. Howard, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, and Michael Crichton.

This book seems a little odd. Jack Rimes is a rough and tough, combat veteran that seen it all. He’s now a Colonel and in charge of a Emergency Reaction Force (ERF) that seems to have proven itself in that the “Genie” war is over. Genies, as you’ll recall, are humans that were created in the labs via manipulation of human DNA. The have some animal characteristics interwoven with their human DNA which makes them a little different than the normal human. They were also considered experiments by the scientist who made them and subsequently destroyed when they came out wrong.

As sentient beings, these Genies began recognizing that they were not being treated as humans which they felt they should be. They were probably right. So, a war was started between normal humans and Genies. It seemed as if the Genies were bent on destroying every single human in the solar system, yet they continued to say they wanted nothing more but to leave Earth and human-kind alone and far away. Jack Rimes and his soldiers had learned how to fight the Genies a long time ago. His success during the Genie war brought him to where he is now, idle, but training for the next war.

It seemed inevitable that there would be a “next war”. As it turns out, this war involved the metacorporations finally deciding they had enough of government interference and would not be subjected to it any longer. Several of the metacorporations even joined together to form a mega-corpration, something no one believed would ever happen. Most metacorporations were to greedy, too power hungry to share themselves with any one else. But, one has came into being and now it wants to eliminate it’s biggest challenge and that is Jack Rimes and his ERF. They almost do so with a vengeance!

Still, there’s something suspect about this sudden merger of giant corporations that isn’t right. They’ve decided to set up on Earth. That’s when things began to change for the worst. Yet, the people of Earth didn’t seem to notice. Something dark and sinister has begun controlling them and they are wondering around in ignorant bliss, while the world crumbles. It’s up to Jack Rimes and surprisingly a group of friendly Genies to stop whatever is going on, on Earth.

The action is pretty fast and exciting if a little bit hard to keep up with. A lot of things happen in the story. Some of this stuff doesn’t make sense and some kind of does. The biggest thing that doesn’t make sense to me is that the ERF will play a role in future books, but there will be a huge missing part and I don’t understand how the story can continue. I’m not sure I’ll be interested.

Conclusion

I've enjoyed the series and characters. In this concluding story I felt some of the story arcs were a bit rushed and choppy. For example, late in the book Dana offers to make a confession to Rimes but then the scene shifts past her with no return. I had to go back to see if I had somehow read past it. Essentially, her character was done and dropped. Much the same was done with Rimes' wife in a previous arc. It makes major characters into plot devices instead of having a real story of their own and it's jarring as it happens. It's clear the author has lots of layers for the story in his head but sometimes skips some of the details of them to get to his next point. This happened with supporting main characters and with the introduction of alien technologies in the story. They appear and disappear with little warning.

I think the author is actually a superb talent but perhaps doesn't see how good he is sometimes and takes a convenient rather than creative path forward. His actual writing is better than this and I think he could rank with some of the great scifi author's if he really committed to the effort.

Loved the story ideas and still enjoyed the book. The characters continue beyond these stories to new ones in another series.

We always need heros!

The Earth is ever changing, do people need to change also? I'm a world where people can now edit themselves with their genes, chemistry, or by just training. Our hero Jack Rimes comes from this new world, and tried to protect it. It is a good and fast story.

Decent writing, good story line.

Plot could be a bit difficult to follow at times, however the story line could be a prophetic omen of how corporations seem to be developing today.

Great, Unexpected, Finale to Imaginative

P R Adams changes gears with this third volume in the Jack Rimes Trilogy. It starts out like the previous two volumes, then turns in an unexpected dimension. Just when I thought the series seemed predictable...

While unexpected, the change was very interesting. Adams provides us with an end to this series, but I really can't tell if this is the end.

Adams is a masterful writer in this trilogy. His vision of a totally dysfunctional and dystopian (evil) future human society is almost predictable in some ways. It is frightening to imagine such a future, but he is merely chasing trends to their logical conclusion.

Well the finale sure surprised me. What is real? What is something else? How can you tell the difference? When the sleeper awakes, is he still dreaming - dreaming about waking?

I hope to read further stories from P R Adams. Although the plot gets a little more twisty than most military space opera, I think this improves the story. Highly Recommended...the book and the entire trilogy

What a great series. Consistently good, tight writing throughout the entire series.

"Awakening to Judgement" was a terrific ending to the Rimes series. I really enjoy P R Adams style and the flow of his novels. Great, memorable characters (even the ones who die! - no "red shirts" here), intrigue, wonderful plots.

I'm looking forward to more from this author!

Adam's granular writing style doesn't let you take a break!

The only weakness to the trilogy lies in bringing an almost supernatural force of evil into an otherwise very realistic and engaging world. One of the best military Sci-fi works that I've read and encourage everyone to read them.

I find this book much weaker than the previous ones.

There are some interesting back ideas and stories about how the world could turn to be left in the hands of meta-corporations. That being said, this book does not add that much compared to what was hinted at in the previous books.

Though the actions and thinking of the main character is still relatively realistic in the settings of the book, I felt that I was reading the same again and again.

I found that the author was pushing the non-sensical actions that can happen in times of war a bit too far as well, and I really didn't like the last bit and the ending of the story that don't really make much sense.

As I got the e-book version of the trilogy, it came with the beginning of the following series and hints that everything will be explained, but at this point I no longer want to invest any more time reading it.

I managed to read the Stefan Mendoza series before this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. This series though, I'm not entirely sure about. I like the author's writing style, and loved the action as well. Somehow, though, it felt like there was just too much happening. Plot points felt like they were all over the place, story lines were dropped without explanation, new ones introduced out of nowhere.
I completed the series and I still can't tell you what it was about. I was always caught between enjoying the story and then being completely lost to what was happening.

I'm waiting for someone who had a better grasp of the series to give a synopsis, please. The resolution didn't feel like a resolution for me, and I'm sure it's because I failed to understand something along the way.

At the moment, it feels like I wasted my time.

Military sci-fi with a touch of humanity. Well written (future) world without having all elements laid out in detail (some of which you will have to imagine on your own). Strong lead character who is relatable, with flaws. To a large extent he is swept along by events, granted an influential role because of his skills and integrity; he is a Commando Sergeant with visibility within the Supreme Council (which is some sort of UN body) and the intelligence community due to his success and smarts. I particularly liked: the setting of a fading Earth, the action, and the ambiguity. I like everything that I have read by P.R. Adams to this point, so, of course, I am now reading the next book in the series.
